SUMMARY:Understanding the AI Boom: Power\, Politics\, & the Future of U.S.-China Relations.
DESCRIPTION:The 1990 Institute is pleased to invite you to our latest webinar: Understanding the AI Boom: Power\, Politics & the Future of U.S.-China Relations \nArtificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how nations compete\, how economies grow\, and how cultures evolve. At the heart of this global shift is the U.S.-China relationship\, where the race for AI leadership is emerging as a modern Cold War — a watershed moment signaling that the AI revolution is no longer distant\, but already here. And when it comes to the U.S. and China\, many are seeing the future of tech as an existential race that needs to be won. \nFor a generation raised in the era of smartphones\, AI isn’t a futuristic idea—it’s part of everyday life. This webinar invites educators\, parents\, students\, and community members to look beyond the headlines and build a deeper understanding of the global forces shaping our digital and physical world today. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll examine the societal\, ethical\, and geopolitical dimensions of technology. Our aim is to lay the groundwork for modern digital literacy including empowering educators to teach it with clarity and confidence. This session is designed for everyone interested in becoming a more informed global citizen in this rapidly evolving digital age. This virtual webinar is open to all audiences\, with a segment at the end devoted to high school educators teaching contemporary history\, economics\, technology and social studies. \nSpeakers: \nGraham Webster — Editor-in-Chief\, DigiChina Project\, Stanford University — a policy expert on U.S.-China technology relations. \nZeyi Yang — Senior Writer\, WIRED — a journalist covering the cultural and human impact of China’s digital revolution. \nClay Dube — Director Emeritus\, USC U.S.-China Institute (USCI) — an expert in historical U.S.-China relations.

SUMMARY:Webinar – Family Detention: Realities and Resistance under Trump 2.0
DESCRIPTION:We have all seen the heartbreaking images of families being picked up\, zip tied\, and terrorized by ICE\, Border Patrol\, and other masked federal agents. Mothers\, fathers\, grandparents\, teenagers\, and little children – family units that start their day together and end up in detention and often separated. What happens when families are taken from our communities? Where are they detained\, what happens to the kids\, and how many are quietly deported or disappeared? \nOn Tuesday\, November 18 at 5 pm ET/ 4 pm CT/ 2 pm PT\, the National Coalition to End Family and Child Detention invites you to join us for an interactive webinar to learn about: \n\nThe history of family detention in the U.S.;\nThe current conditions families face in detention and the policies that fuel this unjust practice;\nWhat people across the country are doing to oppose family detention and protect their communities; and\nHow you can join the movement to #FreeFamilies from detention once and for all.\n\nIn the Trump Administration’s push to deport over 1 million people – with hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars funding ICE and CBP to terrorize communities – ICE has revived the practice of family detention in the United States. Family detention—like all immigration detention—is inherently inhumane\, unjust and unnecessary. Detention inflicts profound harm on both children and adults that continues long after they are released and is especially traumatizing for children. As a growing number of families are kidnapped\, detained\, and forcibly removed or disappeared\, it has never been more important for us to stand up for justice and for one another. \nSpeakers include: \n\nMike Ishii\, Tsuru for Solidarity\nAmy Fischer\, Amnesty USA\nJavier Hidalgo\, RAICES\nGuadalupe De la Cruz\, American Friends Service Committee (FL)\nBeatriz Batres\, La ColectiVA\nSulma Franco Chamale\, Grassroots Leadership\nTania Wolf\, National Immigration Project\n\nPlease share widely with your networks and communities! Spanish – English interpretation will be available.
