DESCRIPTION:This August\, join us for the first public presentation of Chunxiang: A Queer Musical\, an original Mandarin musical inspired by The Peony Pavilion. \nABOUT THIS WORKSHOP \nThis event is a work-in-progress staged musical reading workshop featuring the first half of the musical. It is not a complete production or a fully staged performance. \nThrough live readings and musical performances\, audiences will have an early opportunity to experience the world\, characters\, and music of the piece as it continues to take shape. \nThe presentation will be followed by a conversation with the creative team. We invite audience members to share their responses\, questions\, and ideas. Your feedback will become part of the musical’s ongoing development. \nRather than simply attending a finished performance\, you are being invited into the creative process and helping us discover what this story may become. \nABOUT THE MUSICAL \nChunxiang: a queer musical is an original Chinese-language musical reimagining the Ming-dynasty classic The Peony Pavilion through a queer-feminist lens. The piece blends the lyricism of Chinese opera with the emotional immediacy of contemporary musical theatre\, exploring desire\, death\, and rebirth across time. \nAt its heart is the belief that queerness is not a modern invention\, but as old as human longing itself. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and Fuzhou Sisters warmly invite you to an afternoon exploring the history\, memory\, and culture of the Fuzhounese community through storytelling\, performance\, archival art\, and Qinghong rice wine. \nFor decades\, Fuzhounese immigrants have shaped New York’s Chinatown\, carrying stories of migration\, resilience\, labor\, family\, and home. This event highlights a rarely seen chapter of that history through artifacts from MOCA’s collection\, including paper sculptures created by Fuzhounese immigrants detained after the Golden Venture incident. These works preserve their voices\, experiences\, and memories from a pivotal moment in Fuzhounese migration history. \nThrough migration stories\, archival materials\, a guided tasting of Fuzhou Qinghong rice wine\, and a Qinghong-inspired performance\, we will trace the journey of a community across oceans and generations. A Tale of Proto-Japan\, a frenzied international premiere hurling you headfirst into an ancient Japanese festival eating itself alive. Known for exhilarating physicality that slices through contemporary events with glee\, Shimojima turns the scalpel inward\, dissecting Japanese national identity and imperial myth as her dancers cycle through a slowly revolving human-sized hamster wheel.
