This special Live Jazz Night features the New York-based Jinju Kim Quartet\, led by a rising star from South Korea\, in collaboration with world-renowned guitar maestro Pasquale Grasso. \n​Jinju Kim is a captivating jazz singer who grew up listening to everything from classical music to 50s jazz standards and old pop. Falling in love with legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan\, she went to the Netherlands to study jazz at the Prince Claus Conservatoire. Later\, she was selected for the master’s program at the prestigious Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College by David Berkman. Since moving to New York in the fall of 2024\, she has been making a name for herself in the local jazz scene\, playing with talented young musicians and top masters alike. \n​This performance marks a special collaboration with guitar maestro Pasquale Grasso. Based in New York\, Grasso plays with such extraordinary command that jazz legend Pat Metheny called him “the best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my entire life.” He brings the clear and upbeat improvisation of the great bebop tradition—like Bud Powell and Charlie Parker—right to the stage with a modern touch. As a bandleader\, she has appeared at major venues and festivals\, including the Kennedy Center\, Moscow Symphony Hall\, and the Montreal\, Newport\, and Montreux Jazz Festivals. Early in her career\, she performed at Barack Obama’s 2009 Presidential Inauguration and later joined Jon Batiste’s house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She has released 15 albums and is known for a genre-crossing sound blending jazz\, pop\, and electronic influences. \nGrace is a nine-time DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star\, winning Alto Saxophone in 2017 and Baritone Saxophone in 2023. As a songwriter\, she was awarded “Song of the Year” in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for Feels Like Home. \nShe has collaborated with artists including Dave Brubeck\, Wynton Marsalis\, Harry Connick Jr.\, Gloria Estefan\, Lin-Manuel Miranda\, and Questlove. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America proudly presents Wonggongchang Mega Explosive\, the second full-length album by Taiwanese composer\, electronic musician\, and producer Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang\, a.k.a Kaiwei. \nSet for 2026 release under AAPI artist collective Choaspace\, Wonggongchang Mega Explosive is a ten-track sonic narrative and song cycle centered on one of the deadliest man-made disasters in Chinese history: the 1626 Tianqi Explosion\, with over 20\,000 casualties. Drawing from ancient Chinese classical texts and historical documentations\, each piece reimagines anecdotal episodes from the event\, unfolding in a format influenced by anthological drama\, film and video game soundtracks. Through a contemporary lens\, the work integrates found sounds\, text-to-speech\, and Y2K-influenced sonic cues for explorations of artificiality\, emotional detachment\, and modern desensitization to large-scale violence in the age of information overload. \nAccompanied by live Mandarin narration\, texts\, and animations drawn by Taiwanese graphic artist Nancy Hsiaowen Hu\, the performance invites audiences to experience history\, through modern perspectives\, as a living\, resonant field shaped by sound\, story\, and interpretation. \nABOUT Tianqi Explosion \n\nThe Wanggongchang Explosion (also known as the Tianqi Explosion) was a catastrophic disaster that occurred on May 30\, 1626\, in Beijing during the late Ming Dynasty. Centered at a major gunpowder factory and armory\, the blast destroyed a large area of the city and reportedly killed around 20\,000 people. \nContemporary accounts describe a sudden rumbling sound\, followed by a massive explosion that flattened buildings within a radius of about 2 kilometers\, sent debris flying across the city\, and was felt over 150 kilometers away. \nThe exact cause of the explosion remains unknown. While many believe it was an accidental gunpowder detonation\, other theories—including a meteor airburst or natural gas explosion—have been proposed\, with no definitive consensus. \nBeyond the immediate destruction\, the disaster had major political and cultural consequences. It was widely interpreted at the time as a form of divine punishment\, weakening confidence in the Tianqi Emperor and further destabilizing the already declining Ming Dynasty. \n\nABOUT Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang \n\nKaiwei is the progressive electronic music project of Calvin Kaiˇ-Weiˉ Chang\, a NY-based Taiwanese electronic musician\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Active in both NY and East Asia’s contemporary music scenes\, Chang’s style blends Industrial\, Noise\, Ambient\, Dance and Pop\, often explored through experimental techniques\, diverse composition methods\, and innovative forms. Chang’s works often combine a broad range of improvisational vocabularies with non-traditional post-production\, songwriting\, and sound design approaches. Chang composed for director Ichen Wang’s 2022 stage play\, “Dress In Code”. His debut LP\, “Reprocessor” (“darkly invigorating\, glitchy soundscapes\, touting a dynamic range from unsettling spaciousness to dexterous rhythmic haunts\, at times resembling a cross of Burial and Oneohtrix Point Never” – Obscure Sound 2024) was released under Long Echo Records\, 2023. Chang was a 2024 Found Sound Nation – OneBeat Taiwan fellow\, and was most recently a recipient of Taiwan’s National Cultures & Arts Foundation Grant for his production for composer Chloe Yuchun Hu’s 2025 record\, “The Impermanence Of Permanence”. His second LP\, Wonggongchang Mega Explosive\, is due for 2026 release under AAPI artist collective\, Choaspace.

A practitioner of Gangnyeong Talchum\, a form of Korea’s National Intangible Heritage\, she began training in elementary school and later studied traditional performance at university. Though rooted in a centuries old form\, her artistic voice has developed in dialogue with modern urban life. \nTraditionally\, mask dance (talchum) combined rhythm\, song\, movement\, and dialogue into a comprehensive art form known as yeonhui. While its satire of aristocrats offered audiences catharsis\, female and disabled characters were often reduced to stereotypes. SUMMARY:Anh Vo: Tỳ Bà Hành…But Alas There Was No Music
DESCRIPTION:FourOneOne presents “Anh Vo: Tỳ Bà Hành…But Alas There Was No Music”\, a rare opportunity to experience this quintessential piece from the endangered northern Vietnamese chamber music form ca trù\, which has not been performed publicly in its entirety since 1945. \nTỳ Bà Hành is the latest installment in performance artist Anh Vo’s ongoing dialogue with ca trù\, which traces its origins to royal courts and rituals of the 9th century. Banned in the 20th century by the Communist government because of its perceived associations with elitist antiquity\, prostitution and opium culture\, very few knowledgeable ca trù practitioners now exist. Despite its inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009\, teachers and apprentices still must navigate generational gaps in oral transmission and adapt new ways of reconstructing this extraordinary and fragile tradition. Yet ca trù persists\, austere and trance-like\, built on intricate poetic meters and the striking interplay of female voice\, lute and drum. \nVo began to study ca trù in 2024. Together with their teachers\, one of whom sings and beats the poetry’s intricate metric structures on a section of bamboo (phách)\, and the other on the đàn đáy (3-string long necked lute)\, Vo will give an unabridged performance of Tỳ Bà Hành (琵琶行 Pipa Song) by the Chinese poet Bai Juyi. A Tang dynasty poem that probes the parallel feelings of exile and loss of status experienced by a demoted government official and an aging female musician\, the entire poem takes roughly 50 minutes to perform. But even amongst the most educated scholars and practitioners of ca trù\, few have the knowledge to attempt the piece in its entirety. \nVo’s part in the performance will be the “spectator” (in the ca trù tradition\, often a scholar or connoisseur of the art) who strikes a trống chầu (praise drum) in praise (or disapproval) of the singer’s performance. Vo’s connection to the work is personal; their great-grandmother was a ca trù singer on Khâm Thiên street in Hanoi\, once notorious for its singing houses\, opium dens\, and intimate entanglements between art and sex work. Vo’s great-grandmother was eventually bought out of the singing house by their great-grandfather to be his second wife—a fact that echoes the life of the courtesan musician in Bai Juyi’s poem\, who is married to a merchant in her later years. \nEven though Vo had never heard the music in person\, when they did finally encounter ca trù\, it was not as a neutral “heritage form.” They understood that the music’s virtuosity and refinement were historically inseparable from the lives of the women whose artistry unfolded within colonial economies of pleasure and precarity. \nBased in Brooklyn and Hanoi\, Anh Vo is a Vietnamese choreographer and writer working in the expanded field of performance. Their practice mobilizes the naked body in its variations to make explicit the entanglement of power and ghostly forces that cut across flesh. Their work emerges from the unlikely lineage convergences between Downtown New York experimental performance\, Hanoi performance art\, and Vietnamese folk ritual practices. Vo is indebted to Miguel Gutierrez’s unapologetic queerness and amorphous excess\, Moriah Evan’s speculative commitment to the depth of interiority\, Julie Tolentino’s durational poetics of intimacy\, Tehching Hsieh’s existential sense of time\, and Ngoc Dai’s guttural sonic landscape of postwar Vietnam.

The discussion will be followed with a Q&A and a reception. This is part of the China Now Music Festival\, created to deepen understanding of Chinese culture through orchestral\, operatic\, and chamber music performances. The theme\, Chasing Dreams\, reminds us that the pursuit of dreams is a shared human experience that connects us all. \nThe Festival is centered on two major musical works that focus on the sacrifices and contributions of Chinese Americans. The opening concert\, on October 2 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall\, features “The Rift”\, a chamber opera by Chinese American composer Huang Ruo and playwright David Henry Hwang. The work tells the compelling story behind Maya Lin’s iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial and explores themes of identity and reconciliation. The festival concludes on October 11 at the Rose Theater\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, with Zhou Long‘s “Men of Iron and the Golden Spike”. This large scale symphonic oratorio honors the thousands of Chinese laborers who built the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. The performance will feature an 80-piece orchestra\, a 120-voice chorus\, and six vocal soloists.
