DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening that promises to deepen your understanding of American legal history!\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is thrilled to present the return of its Spotlight Series\, a signature program featuring Chinese and Asian American luminaries sharing their distinctive journeys and expertise. \nThis July\, we are honored to host a special conversation with Judge Denny Chin\, United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit\, Co-Director of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law\, and Lawrence W. Pierce Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Fordham Law School. \nIn this timely presentation\, Judge Chin will explore pivotal historical U.S. legal cases involving Chinese Americans and their enduring impact on citizenship rights. Drawing upon his extensive judicial experience and expertise in historical case reenactments\, Judge Chin will highlight how these significant legal precedents continue to shape American identity\, civil rights\, and immigration policy today. \nAbout Judge Denny Chin \nDenny Chin is a United States Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He was confirmed in April 2010 and took senior status in June 2021. After taking senior status\, he was appointed the Lawrence W. Pierce Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Fordham Law School\, where he also serves as co-Director of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law. From 1994 until his appointment to the Second Circuit\, he served as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. \nJudge Chin graduated from Princeton University magna cum laude and received his law degree from Fordham Law School. He clerked for the Honorable Henry F. Werker in the Southern District of New York; was associated with the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell; served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; was a founding partner of the law firm Campbell\, Patrick & Chin; and was a partner at a firm specializing in labor and employment law\, Vladeck\, Waldman & Engelhard\, P.C. \nJudge Chin was born in Hong Kong. He was the first Asian American appointed a United States District Judge outside the Ninth Circuit and the first Asian American appointed to the Second Circuit. \nJudge Chin and his wife Kathy Hirata Chin have written\, produced\, and presented\, together with a team from the Asian American Bar Association of New York\, a series of reenactments of historic cases involving Asian American litigants. DESCRIPTION:Screening of “The Feeling of Being Watched” followed by a discussion with Asad Dandia about bringing a lawsuit against NYPD.\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of “The Feeling of Being Watched“ (2018)\, where director Assia Bandaoui investigates rumors of surveillance in her Arab-American neighborhood in Chicago. In the process\, she uncovers “Operation Vulgar Betrayal\, one of the largest FBI terrorism probes conducted before 9/11 and reveals its enduring impact on the community. \nFollowing the film\, Asad Dandia will discuss being a teenage Muslim plaintiff in a landmark lawsuit challenging the NYPD’s surveillance of Muslim communities\, leading to a historic settlement. Asad will share his personal experience with unlawful surveillance and discuss the broader implications for civil rights and religious freedom.\nEvent is co-sponsored by CUNY MLSA\, SJP\, LALSA\, IRAP\, LPE and NLG. Tickets are free. Suggested donation of $10 or more. \nAll donations will be given to CLEAR for their case challenging Mahmoud Khalil’s unlawful and unjust detention for his support for Palestinian rights.
