DESCRIPTION:AAPIP is convening a funder briefing to address what the Callais decision means\, what organizations need\, and where philanthropy can act before 2026 election maps are finalized. \nThe Callais Decision Is Already Redrawing Maps. Here’s What Funders Need to Know \nOn April 29\, 2026\, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that effectively dismantled Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The decision raised the legal bar for challenging discriminatory voting maps\, a standard Congress had explicitly lowered in 1982 because it was too high. \nThe consequences are already in motion. Louisiana halted an active primary election to redraw congressional maps. Alabama\, Florida\, Georgia\, Mississippi\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee have initiated or are actively considering emergency redistricting sessions. The maps being drawn now will likely have an immediate impact on midterm elections\, with longstanding implications for future election cycles. \nAANHPI communities in the South are part of this fight. In Georgia\, North Carolina\, Texas\, and Virginia\, AANHPI voters have helped shift competitive congressional seats. The same legal standard that previously protected Black voters from discriminatory mapping also protected AANHPI voters. Its erosion is a shared and immediate loss. \nRegister\nYou will hear from: \nJohn C. SUMMARY:Trans Caribbean: Queer and Trans Arts\, Rights\, and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and The Latinx Project at NYU. Co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality (CSGS)\, Hemispheric Institute\, Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, and the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD). \nDETAILS & REGISTRATION \nAs trans rights and embodiment are under attack in the United States\, trans activists and legal activists are advancing a broad trans rights agenda across the Caribbean. Colombia’s proposed Ley Integral Trans\, for instance\, aims to protect the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals\, while ensuring their full equality and participation in all areas of society. Meanwhile\, like millions of others\, queer and trans people in the Caribbean have historically lived across and beyond national boundaries. Our invited guests discuss their experiences of advocating for trans rights\, sustaining creative practice\, and convening community while crossing gendered\, legal\, and geographic boundaries. The conversations will be accompanied by two performances that illustrate the complexity of living life across boundaries. \nThe first panel\, focused on the struggle for rights\, recognition\, and equality in Colombia\, stages a conversation between Liga de Salud Trans activists Juli Salamanca Cortés and Yoko Ruiz and their artistic collaborators\, photographer Camila Falquez and author Cesar Vallejo. Moderated by Professor Bel Olid (University of Chicago). \nThe second panel examines the Trans Caribbean through its artistic\, social\, and legal movements through a conversation with advocate and program strategist Dane Lewis\, interdisciplinary artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes (LaBoriVogue)\, installation and performance artist Carlos Martiel\, and Black Trans Liberation activist Qween Jean. Moderated by Professor Leo Douglas (NYU Liberal Studies). This panel threads together experiences that cross Cuba\, Jamaica\, Haiti\, Puerto Rico\, and the United States. \nThe closing reception features performances by poet Suzanne Persard\, poet Darrel Alejandro Holnes\, and artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes. DESCRIPTION:“China Initiative” redux? In this era of academic global engagement\, the federal government’s increasing focus on scrutinizing foreign ties leads to new levels of enforcement against researchers and their institutions. These matters\, increasingly prioritized by DOJ\, present unique challenges\, from dealing with difficult scientific concepts (and explaining them to agents and prosecutors) to analyzing potential immigration consequences\, to working with experts unused to legal proceedings. FCLC is pleased to present a distinguished panel of experts to walk us through these and other issues\, at its next meeting and CLE program\, Defending Academics and Institutions in Foreign Interference and Research Security Matters. Pierce Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Fordham Law School. \nIn this timely presentation\, Judge Chin will explore pivotal historical U.S. legal cases involving Chinese Americans and their enduring impact on citizenship rights. Drawing upon his extensive judicial experience and expertise in historical case reenactments\, Judge Chin will highlight how these significant legal precedents continue to shape American identity\, civil rights\, and immigration policy today. \nAbout Judge Denny Chin \nDenny Chin is a United States Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He was confirmed in April 2010 and took senior status in June 2021. After taking senior status\, he was appointed the Lawrence W. Pierce Distinguished Jurist in Residence at Fordham Law School\, where he also serves as co-Director of the Center on Asian Americans and the Law. From 1994 until his appointment to the Second Circuit\, he served as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. \nJudge Chin graduated from Princeton University magna cum laude and received his law degree from Fordham Law School. He clerked for the Honorable Henry F. Werker in the Southern District of New York; was associated with the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell; served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; was a founding partner of the law firm Campbell\, Patrick & Chin; and was a partner at a firm specializing in labor and employment law\, Vladeck\, Waldman & Engelhard\, P.C. \nJudge Chin was born in Hong Kong. He was the first Asian American appointed a United States District Judge outside the Ninth Circuit and the first Asian American appointed to the Second Circuit. \nJudge Chin and his wife Kathy Hirata Chin have written\, produced\, and presented\, together with a team from the Asian American Bar Association of New York\, a series of reenactments of historic cases involving Asian American litigants. In the process\, she uncovers “Operation Vulgar Betrayal\, one of the largest FBI terrorism probes conducted before 9/11 and reveals its enduring impact on the community. \nFollowing the film\, Asad Dandia will discuss being a teenage Muslim plaintiff in a landmark lawsuit challenging the NYPD’s surveillance of Muslim communities\, leading to a historic settlement. Asad will share his personal experience with unlawful surveillance and discuss the broader implications for civil rights and religious freedom.\nEvent is co-sponsored by CUNY MLSA\, SJP\, LALSA\, IRAP\, LPE and NLG.
