Pei assembled an exceptional group of Chinese Americans to address the critical issues impacting the Chinese community in America and help foster positive relations between the U.S. and Greater China. This group of luminaries — Yo-Yo Ma\, I.M. Pei\, Henry S. As a securities management executive an one of the early Chinese American senior financial executives\, he has been engaged in global investment and banking activities in Europe\, Asia and the U.S. for several of the largest Wall Street investment banks including Salomon Brothers\, Lehman Brothers and Prudential. \nHenry Tang’s business experiences have also been enhanced by a broad participation in numerous public and community activities. He has been active in many efforts to help bridge cultural and economic understanding between the China region and the U.S. and between Chinese Americans in the U.S. \nTogether with I.M. Pei\, Yo-Yo Ma\, and a group of prominent Americans of Chinese heritage\, Mr. Tang helped found the Committee of 100\, whose 159 person membership now includes Computer Associates CEO Charles Wang and renowned AIDS researcher Dr. David Ho\, to help create a better understanding of American and Chinese cultural and economic events. \nIn addition\, Mr. Tang also has a long-standing commitment towards fostering conditions for the advancement of Asians into senior leadership positions in business\, politics\, academia\, medicine\, science\, and government. Several years ago\, President George H.W. Bush appointed him to the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission chaired by then Labor Secretary Lynn Martin. \n  \nMr. Tang has also served as a director of the Committee on Economic Development\, the Federation of Protestant Agencies\, the Chinese American Planning Council\, the Asian Financial Society\, and the Chinese American Executive Forum. He also served as a member of the New York-Beijing Sister City Commission. In 1987\, Mayor Edward Koch granted him the Ethnic New Yorker Award. He is also the first recipient of the Asian American Business Achievement Award. Dr. Chiao is a co-founder and the CEO of OneOrbit\, providing keynotes and training to companies and schools. He also serves as a co-founder and advisor of Black Moon\, a commercial lunar data and energy startup. In addition\, Dr. Chiao is an Adjunct Professor at Rice University\, and in the Center for Space Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM)\, and is also a special advisor to the Houston Association for Space and Science Education (HASSE). \n  \nIn 2012\, Dr. Chiao became a Director and the CEO of Diomics Corporation\, a bio-materials company. He led the company through technology and product development\, business development\, testing/validation phases\, and corporate governance restructuring. Having brought the company through its startup phase at the end of 2013\, Chiao transitioned the chief executive position and served an additional two years as an advisor to the Board of Directors. \n  \nFrom 2017-2018\, Dr. Chiao served on the Planetary Protection Committee of the National Academies of Science\, Engineering and Medicine. In June 2009\, Dr. Chiao was invited to be a member of the White House appointed Review of U.S. Human Spaceflight Plans Committee. The committee reviewed NASA’s plans for human space exploration and formulated options for the administration. He served on the NASA Advisory Council’s Human Exploration and Ops. cmte\, (2009-2020) and is the Special Advisor for Human Spaceflight to the Houston Association for Space and Science Education (HASSE). He also served in a similar role to the Space Foundation from 2012-2016. \n  \nChiao was the first Raborn Distinguished Chair Max Faget Mechanical Engineering Professor at Louisiana State University. He served in that capacity from August 2006 through June 2008\, in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He also previously served as the VP and Advisor for Space and Medical for Epiphan Systems (2012-2017) and as the Executive VP of Technical Operations for Excalibur Almaz\, a commercial spaceflight company from 2006-2012. In addition\, Dr. Chiao held appointments in Rice University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2012-2021. \n  \nDr. Chiao served as a NASA astronaut from 1990-2005. He flew four space missions\, serving aboard three Space Shuttles and a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. He also served as the commander and NASA science officer of Expedition 10\, aboard the International Space Station. During his NASA career\, Chiao served in several leadership and management roles\, including branch chief. \n  \nDr. Chiao earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1987\, from the University of California at Santa Barbara\, and joined Hexcel Corporation. There\, he was involved in process\, manufacturing\, and engineering research on advanced aerospace materials. He worked on a joint NASA-JPL/Hexcel project to develop an optically correct\, polymer composite precision segment reflector for future space telescopes. He also worked on cure modeling and finite element analysis. In January of 1989 Dr. Chiao joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore\, California\, where he was involved in processing research for fabrication of filament-wound and thick-section aerospace composites. While at LLNL\, he developed and demonstrated a mechanistic cure model for graphite fiber/epoxy composite material. Image courtesy Mel Chin \nThe annual Wendy Evans Joseph Lecture on Art and Architecture showcases artists whose work addresses the built environment\, and humanity’s impact on the earth and other living things. \n\n\n\nMel Chin will present his work in a public lecture\, followed by a conversation with architect Tei Carpenter. The event will include an audience question-and-answer session. \nMel Chin is a conceptual artist known for a broad range of approaches to artmaking\, including public initiatives realized through multidisciplinary\, collaborative teamwork and works which enlist science as an aesthetic component to elaborate complex ideas. Throughout his career\, Chin has developed a diverse portfolio of projects that employ artistic methods to not only address but intervene in urgent social\, political\, cultural\, and environmental landscapes. \nChin’s artworks include: \n\nFundred Project Prompted by a visit to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina\, Chin initiated this campaign to raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning through the collaborative creation and dissemination of “Fundred Dollar Bill” drawings in schools\, arts institutions\, and civic settings across the country.\nIn the Name of the Place In 1995\, Mel Chin formed the GALA Committee\, a collective which conducted a two-year\, covert public art project on the television show Melrose Place\, creating and inserting conceptual and often subversive props into the popular primetime soap opera.\nThe Funk & Wag from A to Z This installation comprises 524 unique collages which re-edit images from Funk & Wagnall’s The Universal Standard Encyclopedia to pose contemporary and historical cultural critiques.\n\nSince the 1980’s\, Chin’s work has been exhibited in arts institutions around the world and installed across the United States through site-specific projects\, from the ongoing Revival Field\, a pioneering application of green remediation practices initiated in 1990\, to Unmoored\, a 2018 mixed reality experience located in Times Square that envisions a submerged future. Chin was one of the artists featured in the first season of the PBS Series Art of the 21st Century\, focused on the theme of “consumption.” His 40-year survey exhibition at the Queens Museum\, All Over the Place\, was named the best art exhibition of 2018 by Hyperallergic. \nChin is the recipient of numerous awards and grants\, including the MacArthur Fellowship in 2019\, his election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2021\, and the Hiroshima Art Prize in 2024. His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, The Menil Collection\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, among others. \nFollowing his presentation\, architect Tei Carpenter will join Chin in discussion. Carpenter is the founding director of Agency—Agency\, a New York City based architectural design practice specializing in cultural and public projects. In parallel to design work\, Carpenter is an assistant professor at the Princeton University School of Architecture and creates and leads participatory design and advocacy engagements\, with past partners including the Ali Forney Center and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This time\, MOCA is pleased to collaborate with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s to celebrate the legacy of Chen Yi. \nJoin us for an in-depth conversation between Chen Yi and MOCA’s curator\, Herb Tam\, as they explore her musical journey and legacy. This discussion will reflect on the evolution of her work\, revisiting an interview she gave to AsianWeek 30 years ago. We are particularly interested in how her experiences have shaped her music\, especially as she returns to New York City for a five-borough tour (see description below). Her music is published by Theodore Presser\, commissioned\, and performed world-wide by such musicians and ensembles as Yehudi Menuhin\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Evelyn Glennie\, Chanticleer\, the Cleveland Orchestra\, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, BBC Symphony\, BBC Philharmonic\, Halle Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic\, the Seattle\, Pacific\, Singapore\, China National\, San Francisco\, Chicago\, New Zealand Symphonies\, the LA\, NY\, and China Philharmonics\, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and Sachsische Staatskapelle Dresden\, recorded on Bis\, New Albion\, New World\, Teldec\, Albany\, Bridge\, Naxos\, and many labels. She has received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing\, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Columbia University in the City of New York. Ahmed brings extensive experience from grassroots feminist movements and student rights organizations in Pakistan and is a founding member of the Progressive Students’ Collective and Haqooq-e-Khalq Party Pakistan. \nDRUM\, a multigenerational organization led by low-wage South Asian and Indo-Caribbean immigrants\, workers\, and youth in New York City\, has been at the forefront of social and policy change since 2000. By mobilizing thousands of low-income community members\, DRUM addresses immigrant rights\, education reform\, civil rights\, and worker justice.
