SUMMARY:Virtual: China Institute Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Lunch and Learn is a free monthly online program on Chinese language and culture. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. Conducted in English\, the program offers participants the opportunity to gain insights into Chinese life through art and literature\, guided by our language and cultural experts—all from the comfort of home. \nWe are featuring Chinese Medicine in Spring 2026! \nJoin us virtually to explore Chinese medicine as a living cultural tradition and learn how Chinese ideas about the body\, nature\, and balance have shaped daily life for thousands of years. \nTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over centuries\, offering a distinctive way of understanding health\, the body\, and the world around us. Rooted in observations of nature and grounded in philosophical ideas such as yin and yang\, qi\, and seasonal harmony\, Chinese medicine reflects a holistic view of life that connects the human body with the environment\, community\, and time. Exploring these concepts offers a meaningful pathway to understanding Chinese culture\, history\, and ways of living. \nWe will explore core cultural concepts in Chinese medicine\, including balance and harmony\, seasonal living\, food and herbs as everyday supports\, and gentle mind–body practices. We will highlight how these ideas have influenced daily routines\, dietary habits\, and wellness practices across Chinese history and into the present day. \nContact:\nYongqiang Lin\, ylin@chinainstitute.org \nSee the playlist of past Lunch & Learn on YouTube

SUMMARY:The Health Impacts of Immigration Policy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the NYU Migration Network. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nHeld monthly over the semester\, these public conversations bring together scholars\, artists\, and practitioners for cross-disciplinary exchanges to develop and refine understandings of migration and mobility\, its histories\, and its political stakes. With migration so sensationalized by much of the media\, these conversations are a rare opportunity to invite the public to engage with questions of migration and mobility in a nuanced\, thoughtful\, and analytical manner. \nThis conversation on “The Health Impacts of Immigration Policy” will feature Maria Elena de Trinidad Young (UCLA) and Laura Wherry (NYU). \nNYU campus access guidelines: This is an in-person event\, open to the public. Registration is required. \nAccessibility note: If you have any access needs\, please email migration-network@nyu.edu. \n  \nMaria Elena de Trinidad Young\, PhD\, MPH\, is an affiliate at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and an assistant professor at UC Merced. Young focuses on the impact of the US immigration system on the health of immigrant populations. Her research examines the relationship between health inequities and factors such as citizenship and legal status and state and local policies. Her current research seeks to understand the various structural\, institutional\, and individual mechanisms that link policy with health outcomes. \nYoung was formerly the project director of the NIH-funded Research on Immigrant Health and State Policy (RIGHTS) Study which seeks to understand the experiences of Latino and Asian immigrants in California in the areas of health care\, social services\, employment\, education\, and law enforcement and how these experiences have had an impact on their health and access to health care. Young was also the Chancellor’s postdoctoral fellow at UC Merced where she lead a study to examine how media coverage of immigration policy may influence immigrant well-being. \nLaura Wherry is an associate professor at NYU Wagner and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the Economics of Health program. During the 2024-25 academic year\, she served as the senior economist for health care on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. Her research focuses on the role of public programs and policies on the health and economic well-being of individuals in the US. She has a particular interest in policies that affect access to health care for women and children in lower income families. \nImage: U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations following the implementation of Title 42 USC 265 at the northern and southern land borders\, March 22\, 2020\, photograph by Jerry Glaser. SUMMARY:APAICS Health Summit
DESCRIPTION:On March 25th\, the 2026 APAICS Health Summit will air virtually. The APAICS Health Summit brings together frontline workers\, community and corporate leaders\, subject matter experts\, and elected officials for bipartisan policy discussions on issues that affect our communities and the nation at-large. The Summit will explore topics such as representation in healthcare and research\, and healthcare accessibility for our community. \nAttendees will:\n\n\n\nHear from state and federal elected officials to stay informed on legislative priorities and policy shifts\nGain insights from subject-matter experts and community advocates on top issues like access and affordability\nDeepen their awareness of critical health issues impacting our country and communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers\n\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Health Summit will feature Congressional leaders\, including Sen. Mazie Hirono (HI)\, Rep. Ted Lieu (CA-36)\, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-07)\, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)\, Rep. Jill Tokuda (HI-02)\, and Rep. Amata Coleman Radewagen(American Samoa). \n\nPanel Preview\n\n\nFrom Data to Decisions: Equity and AA & NH/PI Health\n\n\nAggregated health data often masks the vast diversity within AA & NH/PI communities\, obscuring unique health risks\, disparities\, and access gaps across subgroups. This panel will spotlight why disaggregated data is not just a data‑tech issue but a critical lever for improving health outcomes\, particularly as AI becomes more integrated in healthcare. Experts and practitioners will discuss how better data can improve culturally attuned and preventative care\, and how its absence can perpetuate invisibility and inequity. \n\n\nThe Care We Need: Building a Strong Health Workforce\n\n\nAmid growing national shortages\, the health workforce pipeline continues to fall short for AA & NH/PI communities—especially in mental health\, where limited representation undermines access to culturally competent care. This panel explores how the provider shortage strains both patients and the few clinicians serving them\, deepening burnout and widening equity gaps. Leaders across education\, policy\, and healthcare will discuss bold strategies to rebuild a thriving workforce and reimagine a care system that truly meets communities where they are. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrom Guam to Flushing: Mapping Health Disparities Across Our Communities\n\n\n\n\n\nHealth outcomes are shaped by a multitude of factors\, from geography to age\, to the unique challenges faced by rural and island communities. This panel will explore how elements like remote location\, elder care needs\, chronic disease management\, and limited healthcare infrastructure can lead to disparities for certain communities. Panelists\, including community advocates\, rural‑health policymakers\, and care providers\, will discuss strategies to tailor solutions\, build sustainable access networks\, and leverage support to help all communities thrive\, regardless of where they are located. \n\n\nThe Access and Affordability Question: Coverage\, Costs\, and the Future of Care\n\n\nAs Congress debates the future of federal health legislation\, the pending expiration of enhanced ACA subsidies threatens to widen existing gaps in coverage and affordability for AA & NH/PI communities. This panel will examine how rising prescription drug costs and shifting market dynamics intersect with subsidy loss\, changes to Medicaid\, and overhauls to vaccine schedules\, reshaping access to care and the broader medical landscape. Leaders from health systems\, community organizations\, and industry will discuss strategies to protect affordability and ensure coverage moving forward for our communities.
