SUMMARY:Book Talk | Eating the Whole Fish by Zoe Lee and Annie Chen
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nA seafood anthology on coastal culture\, ocean health\, and whole fish cooking. \nFrom BEAM Studio\, in collaboration with nonprofit Eating with the Ecosystem\, EATING THE WHOLE FISH is a 200-page exploration of sustainable seafood systems through recipes\, interviews\, photography\, essays\, and cultural stories. It began with the simple idea that eating local species requires (predominantly white) New England communities to learn to eat the fish whole. This idea grew into a project exploring care\, cross-cultural dialogue\, food culture\, and the people working to build better relationships with our oceans. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nBEAM is a next-generation studio shaping the public life of emerging science. \nFounded by Annie Chen and Zoe Lee\, BEAM partners with climate tech innovators\, scientists\, policymakers\, and local communities to shape how new ideas move beyond the lab and into the world. Through research\, design\, systems thinking\, and new media storytelling\, BEAM builds worlds people can step into—where new technologies can be encountered\, understood\, and stewarded forward at scale. \nDrawing from their backgrounds in biology\, behavioral decision sciences\, and design\, the duo brings interdisciplinary fluency and sociotechnical expertise to collaborations that span ocean restoration\, biotechnology\, astrobiology\, and climate governance. Their ultimate mission: to align scientific possibility with collective life. \nTheir work has been supported by NASA\, NOAA\, MIT Media Lab\, EY Intelligent Realities Lab\, Science History Institute\, MacDowell\, NYFA\, Interlace Fund\, and more. They are Research Affiliates at the MIT Media Lab’s Community Biotechnology Initiative and in the Year 12 Creative Science track of NEW INC.

SUMMARY:The Road to Top Colleges: What Students Should Be Doing Each Year of High School
DESCRIPTION:The road to a top college does not begin when a student opens an application during senior year. It begins much earlier—with the academic choices\, classroom habits\, relationships\, interests\, and experiences students develop throughout high school. Join **The Serica Initiative** and **AtomicMind** for a timely back-to-school webinar offering students and families a practical\, year-by-year roadmap from freshman year through senior year. Led by **Leelila Strogov\, Founder and CEO of AtomicMind**\, alongside members of the AtomicMind team\, this program will examine what students can do at each stage of high school to become stronger learners\, make a meaningful impression on teachers\, and develop the skills and experiences that selective colleges value. \nTopics will include: \n• What students should prioritize during each year of high school\n• How to begin the school year with strong academic and organizational habits • How students can participate authentically and leave a positive impression in the classroom\n• Building meaningful relationships with teachers\, counselors\, and mentors\n• Understanding weighted and unweighted GPA\n• How grading systems and course rigor vary among high schools\n• How colleges evaluate grades within the context of a student’s school\n• Choosing among AP\, IB\, honors\, and other advanced courses\n• Developing intellectual curiosity\, leadership\, and meaningful extracurricular interests\n• Common mistakes students and families should avoid \nThe AtomicMind team will also present two detailed student case studies—one featuring a female student and one featuring a male student. Attendees will follow each student’s journey through all four years of high school\, examining the choices they made\, the challenges they encountered\, how their interests developed\, and the eventual college admissions outcomes.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | The Chinese Lady by Bo Wang
DESCRIPTION:Pre-purchase your copy of the featured title to guarantee your signed copy! This helps ensure that everyone who wants a book goes home with one\, in case we sell out at the event.\n\nABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n\n\nBo Wang’s gorgeous and immersive debut historical novel immortalizes the life of the first Chinese woman to be brought to the United States in the 1800s. \nLittle Sparrow\, Julia\, Afong Moy\, Madame Moy\, The Chinese Lady\, were her many names . . . but her true name has been lost to time. \nIn 1834 Afong Moy was brought to New York by two merchants as a live exhibit. Rising to fame as the first Chinese female in the United States\, she became an oddity among curios as Americans marveled at the opportunity to observe her astonishing little feet\, broken and bound to resemble lotuses. \nAs the story moves from 1820s Canton to P.T. Barnum’s American Museum\, to Gold Rush San Francisco\, three women introduce us to her many names. Her mother calls her Little Sparrow and sells her to a captain who sails her to New York. The captain’s wife names her Julia and “graciously” treats her as her own. And when she is shunted off to P.T Barnum\, her fellow human exhibitions call her China. Eventually arriving in San Francisco’s Chinatown\, she will at long last claim her name and her own story. \nCombining archival research and brilliantly imaginative storytelling\, Bo Wang masterfully fills in history’s gaps to weave a powerful narrative of survival in the face of hardship\, tragedy\, and betrayal. Told through the eyes of those around her; mirroring her life as an object on display\, until we finally see the world through her own eyes. \n\n\n\n\n\n ABOUT THE AUTHOR \nBo Wang was born in Cincinnati to Taiwanese American parents. Her childhood was peppered with stories of the Monkey King alongside those of Frog and Toad. A graduate of Sycamore Public Schools\, Bo holds an A.B. in history and literature from Harvard College. She now lives in Boston with her family. The Chinese Lady is her debut novel. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAlice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American writer from Norfolk\, Virginia. Her debut novel\, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing\, was selected by booksellers as an Indie Next and Indies Introduce pick and longlisted for the Women’s Prize. She is the recipient of the 2023 Jesmyn Ward Prize from Michigan Quarterly Review\, and her work has been published in MQR\, The Rumpus\, and the Asian American Writers Workshop’s The Margins\, among others. She earned her MFA from Columbia University. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Written Women: Lalleshwari
DESCRIPTION:Written Women is a monthly writers salon at Cordelia\, inviting you to respond to poems\, stories and myths written by and about women. \n\n\nEach month\, we’ll read and discuss a different text to inspire our own free-write session\, drawing from women’s stories of power\, madness\, sensuality\, tragedy\, queerness\, and insubordination. Time will be set aside at the end of each meetup for folks to share excerpts of what they’ve written. \nThis September\, we’ll read the work of Lalleshwari\, also known as Lal Ded\, a Kashmiri mystic from the early 14th century whose deceptivley simple verses deliver profound meditations on philosophy and spirituality\, all through the lens of the everyday. We’ll wander through her body of work\, crossing oceans\, riding horses\, and opening doors. Inspired by her contemplations on devotion\, destruction\, and bliss\, we’ll write our own pieces which reach to uncover the sacred in the mundane. \nWritten Women is led by poet\, movement artist and facilitator Katya Borkov. You can learn more about her work at http://www.everythingspills.studio\, or on instagram @everything.spills \nThis event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \nPainting featured in the banner by Kanayalal S Raina.\n\nPhotograph courtesy of Rebecca Foltin

SUMMARY:Between China and the West: Gu Hongming’s Cultural Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Few figures in modern Chinese intellectual history have generated as much fascination and controversy as Gu Hongming (1857–1928). His extraordinary life\, lived across cultures and civilizations\, continues to raise profound questions about cultural identity\, intellectual tradition\, and the relationship between China and the West. As discussions of global order and intercultural dialogue take on renewed urgency\, revisiting Gu Hongming’s life and thought offers a timely opportunity to reflect on the historical encounters between China and the wider world. \nThe Renwen Society of China Institute is pleased to present an online lecture by Dr. Chunmei Du\, Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Lingnan University\, Hong Kong\, on September 12\, 2026 (8:00–9:30 PM EDT). Based on her newly published Chinese book\, Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey (Qishi Yilü: Gu Hongming Huanxiang Ji\, 2026)\, the lecture offers a fresh perspective on one of the most intriguing figures in modern Chinese history. \nGu Hongming (1857–1928) remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese intellectual history. Born in British Malaya and educated in Europe\, he stunned many by remaking himself as a loyal supporter of the Qing dynasty and a devoted defender of Confucianism. He championed monarchy and Confucian morality\, even defending practices such as footbinding and the queue\, while proclaiming the superiority of the “spirit of the Chinese people” over modern Western civilization. Seen by many of his Chinese contemporaries as an ultraconservative\, he nonetheless rose to prominence in the West as a prophetic voice from the East \nToday\, as shifting geopolitics revive debates about “the West versus the Non-West\,” Gu Hongming’s reflections feel strikingly contemporary. His critique opens up space for intercultural dialogue from a perspective that is at once insider and outsider. His legacy also speaks to ongoing efforts to reimagine “authentic” Chinese culture as a powerful vehicle for projecting global soft power. \nPublished in 2026 by Social Sciences Academic Press\, the Chinese edition of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey traces Gu’s intellectual and psychological journey against the sweeping currents of global history. Following this “cultural amphibian” across geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries\, the book explores his lifelong search for belonging. It brings to life a trickster-sage who moved restlessly between worlds\, never fully at home in either. That in-between existence shadowed him with personal loss\, yet it also gave him the distinctive voice that carried his ideas into global civilizational debates. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Du will draw on her research and the writing of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey to reexamine Gu Hongming’s intellectual world and his lifelong search for cultural belonging. Through the story of this remarkable “cultural amphibian\,” she will explore how Gu crossed geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries while navigating between civilizations\, and how his complex legacy continues to illuminate questions of intercultural understanding\, dialogue\, and identity in today’s world.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Ke Huy Quan's Memoir: Never Say Die
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a release event with Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan\, discussing his new memoir NEVER SAY DIE. \n\nThis event will be hosted on the 6th Floor of The Strand Building located at 826 Broadway on 12th Street. \nCan’t make the event? Purchase a signed copy of Never Say Die here. \n——————————————————————— \nIn this stunning and compulsively readable memoir\, the Oscar-winning star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom\, The Goonies\, and Everything Everywhere All at Once\, Ke Huy Quan\, tells the story of his journey from Vietnamese refugee to 80s child star to the most inspiring comeback in Hollywood history. \n“A monumental work of self-discovery and the power and grace of communal survival. Quan’s voice is crystalline and luminous\, and his Odyssean journey to the screen is\, in itself\, a triumph of storytelling.” –Ocean Vuong \nKe Huy Quan’s Hollywood adventure began when he was twelve years old\, a mere five years after his family escaped Communist Northern Vietnam and settled down to a relatively peaceful life in L.A.’s Chinatown. After attending an open call audition on a whim\, he was unexpectedly swept up in the wild world of filmmaking: learning to swim from Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom\, receiving trucks full of toys from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for his birthday\, meeting Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker\, and making lifelong friends on the set of The Goonies. \nA star of two of the most beloved movies of the ‘80s\, there appeared to be no limit to Ke’s rise. But just a few years later\, the roles had dried up and it seemed like Hollywood no longer had a place for him. He eventually left acting to work odd jobs behind the scenes for directors like Wong Kar Wai. His confidence was badly shaken\, but his love of performing never abated. It wasn’t until decades later\, when he was 49 years old\, that he stepped back in front of the camera to star in a strange little indie film called Everything Everywhere All at Once\, which surprised everyone with its incredible box-office and awards season success. To call Ke’s Oscar-winning performance a triumphant return would be an understatement. \nIn this moving\, inspirational memoir\, Ke paints a vivid self-portrait\, telling both heart-wrenching and funny stories of his early rise\, slow fall from the spotlight\, the resilience that kept him going through his darkest times\, and his eventual resurrection on one of the biggest stages in Hollywood. Never Say Die is the story of Ke’s extraordinary life\, a love letter to the movies and people that shaped him\, and a powerful testament to never giving up on your dreams.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Against Tech Oligarchy by JS Tan and Clarissa Redwine
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\nAs tech bosses fall in line with the right\, tech workers are fighting back. This is the rousing inside story of their movement—and the way it spawned an anti-worker backlash now reshaping the industry. \nAfter Donald Trump’s election in 2016\, the tech industry sprang into action to oppose his right-wing agenda\, with workers and CEOs alike joining mass mobilizations against the new president’s anti-immigrant policies. But it wasn’t long before the tech bosses started to fall in line with the new administration. \nIn response\, tens of thousands of tech workers protested against their own employers for betraying the progressive values that once defined the industry—including organizing against military contracts\, walking out to protest sexism\, and even launching a wave of union drives. By the early 2020s\, these workers had sparked what observers were calling the tech worker movement\, one that seemed capable of checking the industry’s reckless growth and reactionary drift. \nBut as their struggle grew\, so did the employers’ backlash. A new class consciousness took root among tech’s billionaire owners. Hell-bent on stamping out any and all dissent\, tech executives embraced Trumpism\, fired organizers\, and began lashing out against the “woke” ideology they blamed for turning their once loyal employees against them—and replacing the good tech jobs of the 2010s with incessant layoffs\, grind culture\, and a management style that treats workers as disposable. \nAGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY provides a gripping account of this inspiring workers’ movement and the rise of the hostile labor politics that define Silicon Valley today. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nJS Tan is getting his PhD at MIT and formerly worked in tech\, where he spent years organizing across the industry. His work has been featured in The New York Times\, MIT Technology Review\, Dissent\, Jacobin\, Foreign Policy\, The Baffler\, and The Guardian\, among other outlets. More of his work can be found here. \nClarissa Redwine helped organize the Kickstarter union\, and has since dedicated herself to organizing the industry. She cofounded and runs the annual tech organizing conference Circuit Breakers. Her organizing work has been featured in The New York Times\, the BBC\, The Guardian\, The Verge\, TechCrunch\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Curator’s Talk: Strolling Together in the World of Chinese Art
DESCRIPTION:Join three expert art historians in unraveling China Institute Gallery’s anniversary exhibition\, China Institute Gallery at 60\, 1966–2026: Selections from Three Millennia of Chinese Art. Bringing decades of collective expertise\, the speakers will recount the multifaceted stories and messages embedded within these works. They will unpack their ancient history\, whether as objects of private scholarly treasures or as public assertions of dynastic power\, while also remarking on their modern history in the Gallery’s 122 past exhibitions over the past 60 years. \nThe presentations will span a wide variety of media\, featuring classical paintings and ceramics alongside garden rocks\, jades\, and other small objects that recreate the complete sensory tapestry of Chinese cultural life. \nThrough three keynotes and a panel discussion\, the cherished tradition of scholarly dialogue will be revived. We invite you to stroll alongside our curators\, to observe\, admire\, and contemplate these works in intimate detail. \n\nKeynote One: “Pursuit of the Afterlife”\nSpeaker: Dr. Annette Juliano 朱安耐\nFor the ancient Chinese\, the pursuit of the afterlife meant ensuring the deceased’s transition to another realm. This required anticipating their needs and correctly preparing the tomb.  An ancient sage summarized the process: the deceased were treated “as though dead and yet still alive\, as though gone and yet still present.” Well-cared-for ancestor spirits meant good fortune for living. Neglected spirits turned into implacable ghosts. My discussion will center around the enormous creativity this pursuit inspired in Chinese culture – making objects for the tomb\, such as mingqi (clay spirit objects). I will incorporate objects from the exhibition as well as from other sources. \n\nKeynote Two: “The Scholar’s World”\nSpeaker: Dr. David Ake Sensabaugh 江文苇\nOver the past six decades\, China Institute has held many exhibitions that have introduced the world of the Chinese scholar. I will concentrate on just a few works from exhibitions on gardens\, rocks\, books\, and seals. These were all subjects of groundbreaking exhibitions\, and we are fortunate to have been able to reassemble several works from those exhibitions. I will discuss paintings from the Ming dynasty depicting gardens and rocks; rocks from the Qing dynasty; rare books published in the late Ming dynasty; and hardstone seals and books of seal impressions from the early Qing dynasty. All of them open up aspects of life in traditional China. \n\nKeynote Three: “What Makes a Great Chinese Painting?”\nSpeaker: Dr. Alfreda Murck 姜斐德\nChina Institute Gallery at 60 has fifteen excellent paintings on display. They range in date from the Southern Song (12th–13th century) to a few months ago. They range in size from small fans to a hanging scroll two and a half meters tall. Selected to represent ten exceptional exhibitions\, many of these paintings exhibit the factors that make for a great work of art. I will talk about five factors that make a painting compelling. Most of my examples come from paintings in the exhibition; a few are from other sources. Full disclosure – these are subjective judgments but based on years of studying and admiring Chinese paintings.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Sunset at Lion Rock by Matthew Wong Foreman
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\nNobody in Eric’s family talks about why photos of his Uncle Mikey are on every table\, in every room. Years of silence\, together with a relentless Buddhist upbringing\, has Eric convinced he is Mikey’s reincarnation. But when a summer in the mountain temples of Lion Rock Hill results in a crisis of faith\, Eric is confused by his feelings of betrayal. His growing understanding of his place in Hong Kong society and the circumstances surrounding his uncle’s disappearance compels him to question all that he has come to believe is true. And just like his uncle before him\, Eric finds himself forced to choose between his family and himself. \nSUNSET AT LION ROCK is a letter from a nephew to his uncle who died before he was born. It serves as a window into parts of a Eurasian child’s life which his family can never know\, documenting his attempt to navigate racial confusion\, religious trauma\, the meaning of friendship\, and the struggle for self-discovery in a shifting culture on the eve of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRO). \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMatthew Wong Foreman is a Hong Kong-born writer. He read history and philosophy in Hong Kong and Oxford before completing a PhD in History at Northwestern University in the United States\, where he taught history and writing. A monograph entitled To Mix or Not to Mix: The Making of the Chinese Race\, 1895-1949\, is forthcoming in 2027 (Brill\, Leiden). He is currently a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. Sunset at Lion Rock is his debut novel. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nSheung-King is a writer from Hong Kong. His second novel\, Batshit Seven\, won the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. His debut novel\, You are Eating an Orange. You are Naked\, was a finalist for the 2021 Governor General’s Award\, a finalist for the 2021 Canada First Novel Award\, and longlisted for CBC’s Canada Reads 2021. He holds an MFA from The University of Guelph and is completing a PhD in Creative Writing at The University of East Anglia.
