DESCRIPTION:The Serica Initiative presents an intimate evening of conversation with two of the most influential voices in contemporary architecture: Billie Tsien and Calvin Tsao. \nJoin Billie Tsien\, one of the most influential architects of our time and co-designer of the Obama Presidential Center\, for an intimate evening exploring how architecture can serve people\, preserve memory\, and shape the future of our cities. In conversation with Calvin Tsao\, a leading voice at the intersection of architecture\, art\, and culture\, this gathering invites you into a rare dialogue on the values that guide the built world around us.  \nSet in the heart of Chinatown and in partnership with Welcome To Chinatown—a neighborhood layered with history\, resilience\, and transformation—this conversation moves beyond buildings as objects and into architecture as an act of care. Together\, Tsien and Tsao will reflect on the role of design in sustaining communities\, the tension between speed and thoughtfulness in an era of rapid change\, and the quiet responsibility architects carry in shaping how people live\, gather\, and belong. \nBut this evening isn’t just about listening—it’s about participating. \nIn the second half of the program\, attendees will be invited to share a small but meaningful detail from New York City—a material\, object\, or everyday moment that makes them feel welcome or at home. SUMMARY:Block by Block: Mapping the Evolution of Chinatown and Yiddish New York
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of the Museum at Eldridge Street’s 25th Annual Egg Rolls\, Egg Creams\, & Empanadas Street Festival on June 21\, join multimedia journalist Aaron Reiss and Dr. Agnieszka (Agi) Legutko\, Director of the Yiddish Language Program at Columbia University\, on Thursday\, May 14th at 6pm Eastern Time on Zoom to discuss the role of digital mapping in tracing the evolution of Chinese and Yiddish-speaking communities in New York City. \nIn his journalism work\, Aaron Reiss uses maps as visual arguments and storytelling tools. In 2022\, he co-reported an interactive map and story for The New York Times chronicling the origins and disappearance of Chinatown’s Chinese street signs\, investigating the history of the neighborhood on a hyperlocal scale. Since 2014\, Dr. Agi Legutko has worked with Columbia University’s students on Mapping Yiddish New York\, an online archive documenting the historic sites of Yiddish New York\, from Yiddish record labels to iconic theaters and restaurants.
