DESCRIPTION:As part of the opening day’s festivities for Lincoln Center’s Chinese Arts Week\, we present a performance of the millennia-old south China theater procession known as Xing Shi or the Awakening Lion (南国醒狮). The charismatic Awakening Lion hails originally from Guangdong\, which is also the home of Yingge dance (英歌)\, a highly stylized and energetic folk dance that merges Chinese opera acrobatics\, costuming and make-up with characters from classical novels such as White Snake and Water Margin. Both of these traditional arts will leap to life on The Dance Floor with the Awakening Lion Dance presented by Zhao Family Lion Dance Company\, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage carrier\, accompanied by the gravity-defying Fumei Youth Yingge Team from the town of Puning in Guangdong.

The ticket for Body Hack’s Pride Nonstop is sold separately.\nThe club\, the party\, the disco\, the bar\, the rave\, the rager\, the afters\, the carry. Are these all sanctuary\, however imperfect? \nSanctuary After Dark unfolds legacies of nightlife as sites of sanctuary\, particularly as refuge for queer communities across generations in New York City. Artists including Lola Flash\, Alice O’Malley\, and Julie Tolentino will reflect upon queer 90s nightlife and its echoes through today through different creative engagements. These will include a thread of lineage drawn between Body Hack and the Clit Club. Operating from 1990 to 2002\, the Clit Club was a legendary queer party in New York’s meatpacking district that organized and galvanized queer communities through years of crisis and upheaval. Each piece reflects a distinct regional identity—mode\, rhythm\, poetic language—while revealing deep structural and aesthetic affinities that point to common roots. By placing these traditions in dialogue within a single performance\, Of Roots and Colors highlights both cultural continuity and difference\, inviting the audience to hear Iran not as a monolith\, but as a vibrant\, plural soundscape shaped by centuries of exchange. The project comes to life through carefully curated arrangements that respect the integrity of each tradition while allowing for subtle interaction among them. The performance unfolds as a journey from east to west\, with spoken contextual framing that situates each musical segment historically and culturally. Over 20 lion dance groups\, each with their own unique style and energy\, will parade through the greater Chinatown area. The choreography highlights the importance of human relationship and our longing for connection and love for each other\, offering a deeply personal and resonant conclusion to the program. \nBIOS \nAbout TAKE Dance/Take Ueyama \nA native of Tokyo\, Take Ueyama moved to the United States in 1991 to study dance at The Juilliard School in New York City. Upon graduation\, he was invited to join the Paul Taylor Dance Company\, touring internationally for eight years. He also performed extensively with Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theatre. In 2003\, Take made his choreographic debut with Tsubasa\, presented at SUNY New Paltz with fellow Taylor dancers. Chen\, a cultural pillar of New York’s Chinatown\, whose work bridged Asian traditions and American modern dance. Born in Shanghai\, raised in Taiwan\, and trained at Juilliard and NYU\, Chen came to New York in the 1970s and founded HT Chen & Dancers. He went on to create a professional dance company\, school\, and theater at 70 Mulberry Street\, making the Chen Dance Center a vital artistic hub in Chinatown for more than forty years. \nIn recognition of his contributions to the city’s cultural life\, he received the NYC Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture and NYS Governor’s Arts Award. Chen also served as a board member of organizations including the Asian American Arts Alliance and CREATE in Chinatown/Think!Chinatown\, helping to strengthen the role of the arts in community life. \nAt this intimate gathering\, his artistic and life partner Dian Dong will share memories\, rare video footage and images of Chen’s career and discuss his lasting influence.
