Leading the conversation will be author and essayist\, Radha Vatsal. \nWith humor and grace\, the memoir of a first-generation Chinese American in New York City. \nOur Laundry\, Our Town is a memoir that decodes and processes the fractured urban oracle bones of Alvin Eng’s upbringing in Flushing\, Queens\, in the 1970s. Back then\, his family was one of the few immigrant Chinese families in a far-flung neighborhood in New York City. His parents had an arranged marriage and ran a Chinese hand laundry. From behind the counter of his parents’ laundry and within the confines of a household that was rooted in a different century and culture\, he sought to reconcile this insular home life with the turbulent yet inspiring street life that was all around them––from the faux martial arts of TV’s Kung Fu to the burgeoning underworld of the punk rock scene. \nIn the 1970s\, NYC\, like most of the world\, was in the throes of regenerating itself in the wake of major social and cultural changes resulting from the counterculture and civil rights movements. And by the 1980s\, Flushing had become NYC’s second Chinatown. But Eng remained one of the neighborhood’s few Chinese citizens who did not speak fluent Chinese. Finding his way in the downtown theater and performance world of Manhattan\, he discovered the under-chronicled Chinese influence on Thornton Wilder’s foundational Americana drama\, Our Town. This discovery became the unlikely catalyst for a psyche-healing pilgrimage to Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China—his ancestral home in southern China—that led to writing and performing his successful autobiographical monologue\, The Last Emperor of Flushing. Learning to tell his own story on stages around the world was what proudly made him whole. \nAs cities\, classrooms\, cultures\, and communities the world over continue to re-examine the parameters of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, Our Laundry\, Our Town will reverberate with a broad readership.

Ranging from inherited family tales to meditations on the body to animals’ display of love and grief alike\, Emily Jungmin Yoon holds up a mirror to humanity to show that we are animal\, too. In poems full of wonder and want\, she showcases our tendencies to fight or fly\, act with affection and cruelty\, and ultimately\, overflow with life itself. \n__ \nEmily Jungmin Yoon is the author of Find Me as the Creature I Am (Knopf\, 2024); A Cruelty Special to Our Species (Ecco\, 2018)\, winner of the 2019 Devil’s Kitchen Reading Award and finalist for the 2020 Kate Tufts Discovery Award; Ordinary Misfortunes (Tupelo Press\, 2017)\, winner of the Sunken Garden Chapbook Prize. Yoon currently serves as the Poetry Editor for The Margins\, the digital magazine of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, and as an Assistant Professor in the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. \nMonica Sok is the author of A Nail the Evening Hangs On (Copper Canyon Press\, 2020). She has received fellowships from Hedgebrook\, Kundiman\, MacDowell\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Poetry Society of America\, and the Wallace Stegner Program at Stanford University. Her poems have appeared in Best American Poetry\, Paris Review\, Kenyon Review\, and The Washington Post. Her very first publication was with The Margins. She is from Lancaster\, Pennsylvania and currently lives in New York City. \nSally Wen Mao is the author of the poetry collection The Kingdom of Surfaces (Graywolf Press\, 2023)\, and the forthcoming story collection Ninetails (Penguin Books\, 2024). She is also the author of two previous poetry collections\, Oculus (Graywolf Press\, 2019)\, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize\, and Mad Honey Symposium (Alice James Books\, 2014). Zara will be joined by journalist\, television producer\, and writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim. \nIn 2002\, Zara Chowdhary is sixteen years old and living with her family in Ahmedabad\, one of India’s fastest-growing cities\, when a gruesome train fire claims the lives of sixty Hindu right-wing volunteers and upends the life of five million Muslims. Instead of taking her school exams that week\, Zara is put under a three-month siege\, with her family and thousands of others fearing for their lives as Hindu neighbors\, friends\, and members of civil society transform overnight into bloodthirsty mobs\, hunting and massacring their fellow citizens. The chief minister of the state at the time\, Narendra Modi\, will later be accused of fomenting the massacre\, and yet a decade later\, will rise to become India’s prime minister\, sending the “world’s largest democracy” hurtling toward cacophonous Hindu nationalism. \nThe Lucky Ones traces the past of a multigenerational Muslim family to India’s brave but bloody origins\, a segregated city’s ancient past\, and the lingering hurt causing bloodshed on the streets. Symphonic interludes offer glimpses into the precious\, ordinary lives of Muslims\, all locked together in a crumbling apartment building in the city’s old quarters\, with their ability to forgive and find laughter\, to offer grace even as the world outside\, and their place in it\, falls apart. \nThe Lucky Ones entwines lost histories across a subcontinent\, examines forgotten myths\, prods a family’s secrets\, and gazes unflinchingly back at a country rushing to move past the biggest pogrom in its modern history. It is a warning thrown to the world by a young survivor\, to democracies that fail to protect their vulnerable\, and to homes that won’t listen to their daughters. It is an ode to the rebellion of a young woman who insists she will belong to her land\, family\, and faith on her own terms. \n__ \nZara Chowdhary is a writer and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. Hua is a staff writer at the New Yorker and a CBS Sunday Morning contributor. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Julia Flynn Siler\, author of “The White Devil’s Daughters: The Women Who Fought Slavery in San Francisco’s Chinatown”. The book is a revelatory history of the trafficking of young Asian girls that flourished in San Francisco during the first century of Chinese immigration (1848-1943) and the “safe house” on the edge of Chinatown that became a refuge for those seeking their freedom. Originally known as the Occidental Mission House\, it is now known as Cameron House\, home to a thriving social services agency for San Francisco’s Chinatown. \nFrom 1874\, the Mission served as a gateway to freedom for thousands of enslaved and vulnerable Chinese women and girls. Siler tells the story of both the abolitionists\, who challenged the anti-Chinese prejudices of the time\, and the young women who dared to flee their fate. She uncovered the stories of many of the girls and young women who came to the Mission and the lives they later led\, sometimes being part of the home’s staff themselves. \nIn a conversation with Cynthia Lim\, current Vice President of CFHG\, Siler will share her extensive research process and offer advice on how to start writing family stories.
