SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. See Selected Works in the Exhibition to preview some of these important gifts.

SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

SUMMARY:Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asia Society’s seventieth anniversary\, Asia Society Museum presents Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Celebrating 70 Years of Asia Society and the Rockefeller Legacy. \nDisplaying seventy of the finest examples of Asian art in the United States drawn from Asia Society’s permanent collection\, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of bronzes\, ceramics\, and metalwork thoughtfully assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s by John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906-1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909-1992). John D. Rockefeller 3rd founded Asia Society in 1956 with the mission to promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States; the bequest of the collection to Asia Society in 1979 underscores the Rockefellers’ conviction that an aesthetic encounter with great works of art promotes deep cross-cultural understanding. \nWith highlights including spectacular Buddhist and Hindu sculptures\, and rare Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese ceramics\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon celebrates historic achievements in Asian art spanning more than two millennia. The exhibition foregrounds the transformative power of faith and the catalyzing potential of international trade in the creation of great works of art across Asia. \nBuddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon presents a special opportunity for museum visitors to experience the unparalleled quality of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Thrid Collection at its home at Asia Society Museum in New York City.

SUMMARY:Shu Lea Cheang\, LOVER LOVE
DESCRIPTION:LOVER LOVE\, a new commission for the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art by Shu Lea Cheang\, begins with a portal. A window is flung open and the gray wall of an apartment block dissolves into a turbulent\, overcast sky\, against which a smoky being is enveloped by a six-winged seraphim—an angel of the highest order. \nThis opening transition is both a gesture to Cheang’s longtime collaborator\, musician Aérea Negrot (1980–2023)\, who died by suicide\, and a marker of an entry into a hybrid space of documentation and imagination. For this film\, presented as a four-channel installation\, Cheang worked with eight intergenerational performers in Tucson\, Arizona\, all of whom contributed their own experiences\, narratives\, and dreams of and for trans and gender nonconforming life in today’s United States. \nThis collaboratively scripted film moves between physical and virtual space: between performances in a motel room\, a junkyard\, and city streets amid surrounding nature\, we can see desert plants blooming anthropomorphic appendages and souls escaping inhuman oppression to take transhuman flight. \nThe gallery’s four screens\, themselves portals to the film’s world\, can be shifted by viewers into and out of the path of each projector. Each movement triggers a segment of Negrot’s 2011 track “It’s Lover\, Love”—a dreamy\, minimalist meditation on the lingering traces of broken promises and vanished love. These aural and physical shifts create new compositions\, morphing the installation into an active landscape in which to navigate agency\, survival\, and intimacy in a time of escalating political precarity.

SUMMARY:Theater: Indian Princesses (with Discount on May 17)
DESCRIPTION:Access $25 tickets Use Disount Code: JAANY for May 17 at 7pn show. \nIndian Princesses\nby Eliana Theologides Rodriguez\ndirected by Miranda Cornell \nn the summer of 2008\, five young girls of color and their white fathers attend a program designed to bond families through handmade activities\, camp-like adventures\, and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation. But where can these girls turn when the program sparks questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? Inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name\, Indian Princesses is a tender satire that explores the stories we tell\, the histories we omit\, and the truths that live inside us\, waiting to come out.

SUMMARY:Bangladesh Not "Bhaangadesh"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and beyond took actions during the 2024 mass uprisings against the quota system in place\, since 1972\, immediately after the birth of the country in 1971. Featuring articles such as printed international artworks by Bangladeshi artists\, handcrafted tools\, and relevant media\, the exhibition serves as a homage to learn\, reflect\, discuss\, and heal. \nBangladesh\, Not “Bhaangadesh” seeks to raise social (in)justice awareness through showcasing Bangladeshi artistic expression\, and persistent crimes against humanity from the summer of 2024–of government-implemented curfews\, with “shoot-on-sight” commands\, country-wide internet revoked\, houses raids\, innocent lives taken\, and unnecessary arrests made\, etc. After decades of corruption and nepotism\, Bangladeshi students stood up against the unjust quota system of prioritizing government positions rather than basing hiring on skill\, talent\, and merit–for descendants of ancestors prominent in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ed Young’s Bright Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, Ed Young (1931–2023) invigorated the world of children’s books through intimate storytelling\, inventive artistry\, and potent emotionality. This first U.S. retrospective features original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects—focusing on works drawn from his personal story and Chinese folktales—alongside a selection of his sketchbooks\, family photos\, and personal effects. \nYoung achieved distinction as a beloved storyteller and illustrator who challenged younger audiences with pictorial and moral complexity. He was a towering figure in children’s literature\, reaching wide audiences while earning the field’s top honors. His retelling of the Chinese “Little Red Riding Hood\,” Lon Po Po\, introduced generations of children to Chinese folklore and won the Caldecott Medal; he also received two Caldecott Honors for earlier works. Across his career\, he garnered numerous accolades\, including multiple selections for The New York Times’ “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books” list. \nThe exhibition traces Young’s family life in Shanghai\, where he was the fourth youngest of five children. As a teenager\, he and his brother were sent to live in Hong Kong to flee the civil war in China. He immigrated to America for college\, eventually earning an art degree from the ArtCenter School in Los Angeles\, and then moved to New York. “I set out with $20 borrowed money in my pocket to bet my life in New York City\,” he wrote. After being laid off from an advertising studio\, he submitted sketches to children’s book publisher Ursula Nordstrom\, who hired him to illustrate The Mean Mouse and Other Mean Stories (1962)\, launching a career that would span over 100 books. \nHis most memorable projects were deeply personal. Ed Young’s Bright Worlds guides viewers through key moments of his life and oeuvre with original artwork from The House Baba Built (2011)\, about his childhood in Japan-occupied Shanghai; Voices of the Heart (1997)\, exploring Chinese culture through the relationship between writing\, image and his lifelong tai chi practice; My Mei Mei (2006)\, on adopting his daughters; and Bright World (2024)\, a book published posthumously in China\, meditating on the cyclical nature of life. \n“So many of us grew up on Ed Young’s art and storytelling\,” said Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator. “This exhibition will reveal what went into crafting masterworks of the children’s book form. Visitors will be enchanted by his fluent handling of media—from pastel and cut paper to pen\, ink\, and collage—and inspired by his story as a resourceful immigrant striving to make his mark in a creative field.” \n“As a father of three\, I’ve seen firsthand how children’s books shape the way we see the world\,” said Michael Lee\, MOCA’s President. “The imagery and storytelling stay with us—they become part of our family conversations\, our imaginations\, and even the way we share stories later in life. It’s a special honor to explore the life and mind of Ed Young\, whose work has inspired generations. Through this exhibition\, we not only celebrate his extraordinary achievements but also revisit how deeply his art was shaped by his journey as a Chinese American—reflecting his early life in China and the graceful balance he found as a lifelong practitioner of tai chi.” \nEd Young’s Bright Worlds is part of MOCA’s Luminaries for America250\, a yearlong celebration of Chinese American historymakers at the Semiquincentennial. SUMMARY:Theater: Dragoness and Art Exhibit: Misalignment
DESCRIPTION:A high-octane\, satirical commentary on race and creating art under capitalism\, Dragoness interrogates the ethics of reinventing identity in order to satisfy the expectations of those in power. \nWritten by Thai-American playwright Cha Mangan and directed by Samantha Toy Ozeas. Starring Vi To\, Bridget Gao\, Balfour Clark\, and Aaron Applebey. Produced by Tin Can Contingency. To learn more about the project and artists involved: https://givebutter.com/dragoness \nPerformances run May 28th-June 7th\, Thursdays-Sundays\, 7pm at Inspiration Point. Tickets are $15. \nPerformances of Dragoness will be accompanied by a visual art exhibition entitled Misalignment. Misalignment invites artists to respond to paradoxes\, splits\, and contradictions. They are interested in identity as paradox\, in life as contradiction\, and in practices that honor the multitudes within and the multiple realities that serve us both for expression and for protection. Work featured confronts internalized oppression\, betrayal—of language\, land\, lineage—and the uneasy desire to pass\, belong\, or ascend.

SUMMARY:Master Class: Hu Wenge in Performance and in Context
DESCRIPTION:Peking opera master Hu Wenge\, the only living male disciple of the Mei School\, performs The Drunken Beauty in New York City.\n\n\nIn 1930\, China Institute of America invited Mei Lanfang to make his triumphant debut on Broadway. Nearly a century later\, we proudly present a one-night-only opportunity to once again be immersed in the artistry of an internationally acclaimed Peking opera star. \n  \nChina Institute is honored to host Hu Wenge\, a master of the Mei School of Peking opera\, for a special New York performance. As the only male protégé of the late Mei Baojiu\, son of Mei Lanfang\, Hu Wenge is among the very few inheritors in the line of the male dan tradition\, the art of male performers portraying female roles. This landmark event is part of China Institute’s Centennial celebration and is presented in conjunction with the current exhibition “The Dancing Goddess: Mei Lanfang in America” at China Institute Gallery. \n  \nHu will perform in full the iconic drama The Drunken Beauty\, a centerpiece of the opera canon. Through the sophisticated union of movement and music\, he brings to life the distilled essence of the legendary Yang Guifei’s complex emotions as the emperor’s ill-fated favorite. Following the performance\, two distinguished scholars will offer historic insights into the work\, joining Maestro Hu in sharing in-depth reflections on the unique sonic and physical aspects of Sinitic opera. \n  \nThis 10th edition of the Orchid Pavilion Gathering is part of our annual series celebrating artistic exchange\, inspired by the calligrapher Wang Xizhi’s (307–365) historic literati gathering on Mount Kuaiji. \n  \nSchedule \n5:30 – 5:50 PM | The Drunken Beauty; full performance by Hu Wenge\n5:50 – 6:20 PM | “Peking Opera and Literature: Bedfellow or Strangers\, or\, Something in Between?” presented by Dr. David L. Rolston\n6:20 – 6:50 PM | “Answering Mei Lanfang’s Sonic Invitation” presented by Dr. Anna Yu Wang\n6:50 – 7:10 PM | Hu Wenge’s Keynote Talk (in Chinese with English translation)\n7:10 – 7:30 PM | Moderated Q&A \n  \nMaster Peking Opera Performer: \nHu Wenge is a leading actor at the Jingju Theater Company of Beijing\, a principal performer of the Mei Lanfang Peking Opera Troupe\, a China National First-class Actor\, and the third-generation disciple of the Mei School. \n  \nHu studied with many distinguished Peking opera masters\, including Mei Baojiu\, Jiang Fengshan\, Wang Zhiyi\, and Li Yufu. In 2001\, Hu became a disciple of Mei Baojiu\, the youngest son of Mei Lanfang. His repertoire includes renowned Mei School operas\, such as Mu Guiying Takes Command\, The Phoenix Returns\, Wedding in the Dream\, The Cosmos Sword\, and The King Parting with His Favorite (also popularly known as Farewell My Concubine). He has performed the Mei School classic The Drunken Beauty on many occasions at Chinese state banquets. During the world tour commemorating the 120th anniversary of Mei Lanfang’s birth\, Hu was a lead actor and took part in more than thirty major performances in China and abroad\, including appearances at the Musikverein Vienna\, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York\, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, and the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. \n  \nScholars Speakers: \nDavid L. Rolston taught at the University of Michigan (1988-2024) but is still a visiting professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts in Beijing. He has published three books in English: How to Read the Chinese Novel (1990)\, Traditional Chinese Fiction Commentary (1997)\, and Inscribing Jingju/Peking Opera: Textualization and Performance\, Authorship and Censorship of the “National Drama” of China from the Late Qing to the Present (2021)\, and many articles in Chinese. His English language articles include one on selling Peking opera to foreigners and one on the English translation and subtitling of a Peking opera play. \nAnna Yu Wang is Assistant Professor of Musicology at Princeton University where she has also been named the Class of 1931 Bicentennial Preceptor in the Center for Human Values. Yu Wang researches the aesthetics and politics of listening in our globally connected yet ideologically divided present. She is interested in understanding what it means\, and what it takes\, to listen across lines of difference. Her forthcoming book with Oxford University Press\, titled Musicality and the Myriad Things\, combines music analysis and ethnography to frame the sounds of Huangmei opera and Taiwanese opera as invitations into local modes of worldmaking. \n  \nThe Lead Sponsor of the exhibition\, related programming\, and the catalogue is the Center for Language Education and Cooperation. Additional support has been provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the Family of C. T. and Edith Kwok Feng\, the Abel & Sophia Sheng Foundation\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and other individuals and institutional funders. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. “The Dancing Goddess” is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
