SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Siyan Wong: Make It 10 Cents
DESCRIPTION:Make it 10 Cents is a painting exhibition to raise awareness and to support a one-day pop-up redemption on May 26th in Chinatown. This pop-up simulates the passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill by redeeming all materials at the 10-cent rate. \nSiyan Wong’s paintings depict elderly low wage workers who collect cans to survive. Each of her social realist paintings\, in vibrant colors\, captures a fleeting moment that exudes the human experience of living – depicting lives whose efflorescence is held back by the politics of their days. Together\, they show the human spirit always venturing toward a better life. \nThrough these paintings\, she gives visibility to the work of the historically marginalized\, and puts a spotlight on the cans and bottles that end up in costly landfills that devastate our environment. The individuals appearing in her paintings are elderly Chinese immigrants in Chinatown and the Lower East Side who worked in garment factories\, restaurants\, and homecare before turning to rummaging for cans and bottles on the streets. \nWong states that\, “Art is only as powerful as the inspiration for actions that comes from it. ‘Make It 10 Cents’ is an art exhibition about doing right by our vulnerable population of elderly and working poor\, and to protect our environment that is experiencing rapid\, severe degradation driven in part by failure in policies.” \nLocation: Welcome to Chinatown\nRegular Hours: Monday to Friday: 10:00AM – 6:00PM\nDuration: April 14 – May 29\, 2026

SUMMARY:Theater: Indian Princesses (with Discount on May 17)
DESCRIPTION:Access $25 tickets Use Disount Code: JAANY for May 17 at 7pn show. \nIndian Princesses\nby Eliana Theologides Rodriguez\ndirected by Miranda Cornell \nn the summer of 2008\, five young girls of color and their white fathers attend a program designed to bond families through handmade activities\, camp-like adventures\, and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation. But where can these girls turn when the program sparks questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? Inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name\, Indian Princesses is a tender satire that explores the stories we tell\, the histories we omit\, and the truths that live inside us\, waiting to come out.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ed Young’s Bright Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, Ed Young (1931–2023) invigorated the world of children’s books through intimate storytelling\, inventive artistry\, and potent emotionality. This first U.S. retrospective features original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects—focusing on works drawn from his personal story and Chinese folktales—alongside a selection of his sketchbooks\, family photos\, and personal effects. \nYoung achieved distinction as a beloved storyteller and illustrator who challenged younger audiences with pictorial and moral complexity. He was a towering figure in children’s literature\, reaching wide audiences while earning the field’s top honors. His retelling of the Chinese “Little Red Riding Hood\,” Lon Po Po\, introduced generations of children to Chinese folklore and won the Caldecott Medal; he also received two Caldecott Honors for earlier works. Across his career\, he garnered numerous accolades\, including multiple selections for The New York Times’ “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books” list. \nThe exhibition traces Young’s family life in Shanghai\, where he was the fourth youngest of five children. As a teenager\, he and his brother were sent to live in Hong Kong to flee the civil war in China. He immigrated to America for college\, eventually earning an art degree from the ArtCenter School in Los Angeles\, and then moved to New York. “I set out with $20 borrowed money in my pocket to bet my life in New York City\,” he wrote. After being laid off from an advertising studio\, he submitted sketches to children’s book publisher Ursula Nordstrom\, who hired him to illustrate The Mean Mouse and Other Mean Stories (1962)\, launching a career that would span over 100 books. \nHis most memorable projects were deeply personal. Ed Young’s Bright Worlds guides viewers through key moments of his life and oeuvre with original artwork from The House Baba Built (2011)\, about his childhood in Japan-occupied Shanghai; Voices of the Heart (1997)\, exploring Chinese culture through the relationship between writing\, image and his lifelong tai chi practice; My Mei Mei (2006)\, on adopting his daughters; and Bright World (2024)\, a book published posthumously in China\, meditating on the cyclical nature of life. \n“So many of us grew up on Ed Young’s art and storytelling\,” said Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator. “This exhibition will reveal what went into crafting masterworks of the children’s book form. Visitors will be enchanted by his fluent handling of media—from pastel and cut paper to pen\, ink\, and collage—and inspired by his story as a resourceful immigrant striving to make his mark in a creative field.” \n“As a father of three\, I’ve seen firsthand how children’s books shape the way we see the world\,” said Michael Lee\, MOCA’s President. “The imagery and storytelling stay with us—they become part of our family conversations\, our imaginations\, and even the way we share stories later in life. It’s a special honor to explore the life and mind of Ed Young\, whose work has inspired generations. Through this exhibition\, we not only celebrate his extraordinary achievements but also revisit how deeply his art was shaped by his journey as a Chinese American—reflecting his early life in China and the graceful balance he found as a lifelong practitioner of tai chi.” \nEd Young’s Bright Worlds is part of MOCA’s Luminaries for America250\, a yearlong celebration of Chinese American historymakers at the Semiquincentennial. SUMMARY:Theater: Dragoness and Art Exhibit: Misalignment

DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk and Tasting on Fine China\, Empire\, and the Domestic Table\n\n\nJoin Broken China (Tao Leigh Goffe & Cecile Chong) for an artist talk in conversation with curator Dominique Jean-Louis as part of the exhibition Albums of Inclusion: Jamaica/ Ecuador/China. Opening in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the Battle of Brooklyn\, the exhibition reconsiders the material culture of the early republic through the intimate and often violent histories embedded in porcelain\, teeth\, tea\, and sugar. \nFollowing the talk\, guests are invited to participate in a tea gathering inspired by 18th-century tea culture and the social rituals associated with Martha Washington’s table. The program will include tastings of sweets\, herbal teas grown at the Old Stone House garden\, and a sample of Madeira wine\, a drink widely consumed in early American households. \nBy bringing together conversation\, food\, and historical reflection within the Old Stone House\, the evening invites visitors to consider how everyday domestic objects\, china\, tea\, sugar\, and the table itself\, were entangled with the global systems of extraction\, trade\, and empire that shaped the early United States. \n \nFind us on Instagram: \n@brokenchinabrokenchina@darklaboratory@taoleighgoffe@cecilestudio

It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n“Say something in Bengali!” \n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassi\nCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \nTickets sell out fast.\nSeats are limited.\nAnd every month is a completely new lineup.
