SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Science\, Tonight! - A peer-reviewed comedy talkshow
DESCRIPTION:The peer-reviewed comedy talkshow where science comes to life!\n\n\nScience\, Tonight is a late-night comedy talk show with guests scientists who are prepared\, and improvisers who are not\, to talk about science. Host Dr. Mark Popinchalk and the Science\, Tonight reporting team are going to have their hands full keeping the show on the road as scientists and literal forces of nature have their turn in the hot seat. \nScience\, Tonight is like if Conan O’Brien met Charles Darwin\, Eric Andre met Marie Curie\, and John Oliver met the greatest\, underrated scientists of our time\, all to answer the universe’s biggest questions like: What has the speed of light been doing since college? When is my sleep paralysis demon’s new bedtime product line dropping? Has Betelgeuse heard the ending of Romeo and Juliet? The show is packed full of interviews\, audience “peer-review”\, learning\, laughs\, and an escalating sense of wonder and doom as our cast of experts and improvisers bring each topic to life. It’s science today\, tomorrow\, and Tonight! \nMark Popinchalk is an astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History who guesses how old stars are by looking at how quickly they spin; old stars spin slow\, young stars spin fast. He hosts the comedy talk show Science Tonight\, and is also a planetarium presenter\, ultimate frisbee player\, and bread maker. His favorite color is sky-blue-pink. He releases short form videos on socials every week\, and a new video every new moon on YouTube (@markpopinchalk). \nKristina Gustovich is an Earth scientist\, performer\, and educator. When she’s not puttin’ on the Ritz in live shows like Yesterday’s Horoscope\, she’s a doctoral student at Columbia’s Teachers College studying science education in informal settings like museums (and Caveat!). Find her on socials at @K_Gustovich on X and @mucho_gustovich on Instagram. \nIman Behbehani (she/her) is a masters student at the CUNY Graduate Center studying stellar explosions\, from dwarf novae to supernovae. Iman is a producer for Astro on Tap\, and started an affinity group for women of color in stem\, as she strives to make science more fun and inclusive. Outside of astro\, Iman enjoys boxing and riding her bike along riverside park. (Insta: @astroontapnyc) \nEmily Zhang is a writer/director specializing in science YouTube. Her path began with an astrophysics degree\, a lifelong love of video\, and a dream. She cut her teeth making videos and running operations at the science YouTube channel Veritasium\, and now freelances as a producer & advisor across a variety of channels. No\, she doesn’t have her own. Yet. IG @emilylinzhang. \nThis month’s guest! \nKyle Marian is a comedian\, producer\, science journalist and former scientist. She performs across the US and UK\, creating socially-mindful\, inclusive and accessible shows like ‘The Filipino Comedy Festival\,’ ‘Asians Strike Back: A Coronavirus Comedy & Science Show’ and ‘The Symposium: Academic Stand-Up.’ Kyle is now cultivating a network of educational standup comedians through the Science Comedy Collective (IG: @thesefunnynerds).
