SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Theater: Destination Undefined
DESCRIPTION:A futuristic sci-fi play in NYC—robots\, memory cubes\, and a society that forgot what it meant to be human. \nSynopsis/ \nFive AI researchers from the Human Research Institute discover a mysterious Memory Cube buried in a long-forgotten Gold Vault beneath Manhattan. It contains something unimaginable: a living record of human consciousness from the year 2051. \nAs they decode the fragments\, a lost cyborg world begins to emerge — AI units fight for voting rights\, chip-enhanced humans scramble to survive a collapsing system\, and hidden secrets pulse beneath the vault’s rusted doors. Above ground\, a civilization built on algorithms begins to collapse. Below\, the last defenders of a relic economy are trapped with more questions than answers. \nBut the deeper the researchers dive\, the more unstable the memory becomes. Is this just a simulation of the past — or a warning from it? \nDestination Undefined is a genre-bending sci-fi absurdist play about trust\, identity\, and the cost of being human in a world that no longer knows what that means.

Many of his interventions directly confront Chinese history and its current political climate\, such as his infamous photo series Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995) or his poignant response to the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake\, Straight. Other\, more recent artworks address global crises including the plight of refugees and forced migrants commemorated in Law of the Journey and the documentary Human Flow. He serves as an example for free expression both in China and internationally. Ai Weiwei Handbook\, the latest volume in the new series from No More Rulers\, is an accessible\, affordable guide to Ai’s storied career of art and activism. \n\n\n\nAi Weiwei (b. 1957\, Beijing) is renowned for making strong aesthetic statements that resonate with timely phenomena across today’s geopolitical world. From architecture to installations\, social media to documentaries\, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. Ai is the recipient of the Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International and the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent from the Human Rights Foundation.
