SUMMARY:[REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Theater: GUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:Memoirs (Act 2) is the second act of GUT (굿)\, a three-act autobiographical hybrid/dance work and the fifth and final installment of Soomi Kim’s series exploring mortality in Korean and Asian American lives. Act 2: Memoirs examine the complex legacy between a Korean American daughter and her immigrant father\, as she pieces together the history of a man she never truly knew. Set between 1950s postwar Korea and present-day America\, Memoirs traces a poetic journey through grief\, fragmented memory\, and complicated love—asking: how can we let go when grief is a knot of longing and regret? \nGUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs (a work in progress) brings together a stellar company of 4 AAPI performers led by director and co-developer Peter Kim. The piece was first developed at Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor residency in 2023 and continued its journey at BAM’s 2024 Artist Residency\, followed by the Mercury Store in 2025. This production is made possible by support from The NYC Women’s Fund for Media\, Music and Theatre by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts. \nCreated by Soomi Kim. Directed by Peter Kim. Choreography by Soomi Kim. Scenic design by Inji Ha. Lighting design by Lucrecia Briceño and Emmanuel Delgado. Sound design by Michael Chinworth. Projection design by Ein Kim. Piri recordings by Gamin Kang. Dramaturgy by Haruna Lee. Assistant Choreography by Dax Valdes. Translations by Eunji Lee. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930.
