SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:[REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Family Storytelling Workshop By Natalia Nakazawa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a storytelling experience rooted in myth\, imagination\, and family legacy.\n\n\nArtist Workshop: Family Storytelling \nSunday\, August 17\, 2025 | TBD \nJoin us for a storytelling experience rooted in myth\, imagination\, and family legacy. We’ll read the ancient Japanese tale of Urashima Taro\, a story dating back to the 8th century about a fisherman whose life is forever changed after meeting a magical princess in the form of a turtle. Inspired by this myth\, families will have the chance to imagine themselves as a 10\,000-year-old yokai\, the minogame\, a mystical being who has witnessed centuries of human experience. \nIntergenerational Storytelling: \nReflect on the wisdom passed down through generationWhat is something you learned from your ancestors? How has that knowledge shaped who you are today? What is your vision for a sustainable future? What do you hope to pass on to your children? \nArt-Making: Collagraph Printing: \nTogether\, we’ll create collagraph prints of woven patterns on Tyvek\, merging ancestral memory with tactile expression. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa: \nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship: \nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?
