SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:[REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Pornsak Pichetshote\, J. Holtham\, Michael Lee Harris and Michael Walsh (The Horizon Experiment)
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place online over Zoom. Join us in a discussion with the creative team behind the critically acclaimed comic anthology\, The Horizon Experiment\,  a collection of five one-shots by some of the most celebrated names in comics\, literature\, TV\, and film\, providing pilots for new series featuring a Chinese James Bond\, a Muslim exorcist\, a reverse Indiana Jones\, East African werewolves living in Miami\, and an Evil Dead for black nerds! \nAuthor Bios  \n \nPornsak Pichetshote started his career as a Thai-American rising star editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint\, his books being nominated for dozens of Eisner awards — from the award-winning Daytripper to critical darling Sweet Tooth. He left Vertigo to become an executive in DC Entertainment’s media team\, where he started and oversaw DC’s TV department. His critical and commercial horor book Infidel marked his first major work as a comics writer. His current work with Image Comics is the Eisner- and Harvey-winning The Good Asian\, which he’s currently adapting for television with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. \n \nJ. Holtham is an American screenwriter\, best known for his work on TV shows such as Cloak and Dagger\, Jessica Jones\, and Supergirl. He recently broke into Marvel Comics with Bishop- War College\, and is bringing back fan favorite nineties character\, Night Thrasher\, for his first solo series in 30 years. \nAfrican-American cartoonist Michael Lee Harris is one of indie comics’ most singular voices. A jack of all trades\, he is the creator\, writer\, and artist of Black Hitler and Choco Leche while also illustrating such eclectic and distinct titles as The Black Wraith\, Berlin\, and 1945: The True Untold Story in his unique style. \n \nIn 2013\, Michael Walsh broke into comics with the Image Comics book series COMEBACK. Shortly after\, Michael contributed art on a follow-up comic to the hit television series The X-Files for IDW. Then\, in the following years\, he worked primarily with Marvel Comics on superhero properties such as Spider-Man\, The Avengers and the X-Men. He also adapted the Star Wars film The Last Jedi as a comic book mini-series. And created art for the DC/Dark Horse crossover event comic\, Black Hammer/Justice League. \nIn 2021\, Michael returned to creator-owned comics\, creating the hit ongoing Image series THE SILVER COIN and the viral webcomic The Sleep Stories. In 2022\, he released his middle-grade fantasy original graphic novel The Oates & The Elphyne\, published by Humanoids BIG.
