SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:BFF Night w/ Katie Yee: Maggie; or\, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night celebrating books and besties at Melissa Joy Manning Jewelry! \nJoin us for an evening celebrating books and besties with Katie Yee. Get a signed book\, sip a margarita\, buy some bling! The first 30 people who buy a book bundle ticket will receive a FREE pair of Melissa Joy Manning Hug Earrings! \nProse Hoes subscribers receive 25% off of forever bracelets. \nA Chinese American woman spins tragedy into comedy when her life falls apart in a taut\, wry debut novel that grapples with grief\, motherhood\, and myths—perfect for fans of Joan Is Okay and Crying in H Mart. \nA man and a woman walk into a restaurant. The woman expects a lovely night filled with endless plates of samosas. Instead\, she finds out her husband is having an affair with a woman named Maggie. \nA short while after\, her chest starts to ache. She walks into an examination room\, where she finds out the pain in her breast isn’t just heartbreak—it’s cancer. She decides to call the tumor Maggie. \nUnfolding in fragments over the course of the ensuing months\, Maggie; Or\, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar follows the narrator as she embarks on a journey of grief\, healing\, and reclamation. She starts talking to Maggie (the tumor)\, getting acquainted with her body’s new inhabitant. She overgenerously creates a “Guide to My Husband: A User’s Manual” for Maggie (the other woman)\, hoping to ease the process of discovering her ex-husband’s whims and quirks. She turns her children’s bedtime stories into retellings of Chinese folklore passed down by her own mother\, in an attempt to make them fall in love with their shared culture—and to maybe save herself in the process. \nIn the style of Jenny Offill and the tradition of Nora Ephron’s hilarious and devastating writing on heartbreak and womanhood\, Maggie is a master class in transforming personal tragedy into a form of defiant comedy. \nKatie Yee is a writer from Brooklyn. She has received fellowships from the Center for Fiction\, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, and Kundiman. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books\, No Tokens\, The Believer\, the Washington Square Review\, Triangle House\, Epiphany\, and Literary Hub. By day\, she works at the Brooklyn Museum. By night\, she writes\, usually under the watch of her judgmental rescue dog\, Ollie.

SUMMARY:Literary Thursdays: Sarah Chihaya\, Author of “Bibliophobia”
DESCRIPTION:Sarah had always lived through her books\, seeking escape\, self-definition\, and rules for living. She built her life around reading\, wrote criticism\, and taught literature at an Ivy League university. Then\, she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown\, and the world became an unreadable blank page. \nSarah Chihaya’s memoir “Bibliophobia” is a searing and darkly humorous story of breakdown and survival told through books. Delving into texts such as “Anne of Green Gables\,” “Possession\,” “A Tale for the Time Being\,” and “The Last Samurai\,” Chihaya interrogates her cultural identity\, her relationship with depression\, and the intoxicating\, sometimes painful ways books push back on those who love them. \nMeet the author and join the discussion on Microsoft Teams: https://queenslib.org/45Rs

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Betty Yu’s Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Please join Magnum Foundation on Thursday\, July 24th\, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM for an artist talk and conversation celebrating the launch of Betty Yu’s new art and photography book\, Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience. \nCo-hosted by Magnum Foundation and Daylight Books\, the evening will begin with a short reading by Betty Yu\, the artist will then be joined by Rochelle Kwan for a conversation about the uncovering of family roots and the intergenerational memory work. The evening will end with a Q&A and book signing. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFamily Amnesia is a visual tribute and love letter honoring my Chinese American family roots in the U.S. The art book explores my family’s multi-generational resilience and resistance through mixed media collages\, my grandfather’s photographs\, my own captured images and archival material. The book project honors the past and current lives of Asian Americans and immigrants in the U.S. by examining the incalculable and traumatic impact that historical events like the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act continue to have on the Asian American experience. This is a painful part of our American history. I am reclaiming that narrative through my own personal family’s story. The book will feature my grandfather’s role as a founding member of the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance of NY\, my mother’s plight as a garment worker who became a labor organizer\, and my sister’s legacy as a community activist. I know my family story is not unique. It is part of the larger collective Asian-American immigration experience.\n– Betty Yu \n[Buzz #13 at the door] \nMagnum Foundation is in an elevator building and has a restroom that is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral.
