SUMMARY:The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Dan Lie\, Memory Stick ou Pau de Memória\, 2015. (Image: Edouard Fraipont) \nThe Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the region from the 1940s to the present. Focusing on postwar and contemporary art\, the exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists from fourteen countries working in a range of artistic mediums including painting\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, and video\, to shed light into strategies and themes that resonate across a wide array of Asian diasporic practice throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. \nThe exhibition embraces and performs the multiple and interrelated meanings embedded in the notion of appearance\, inspired by Japanese Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura’s 1975 print by the same title. From acts of appearing and becoming visible—including different types of apparitions—to the idea of impressions and physical resemblance\, artists in the show grapple with the complexities of negotiating (in)visibility\, revisiting and remaking family archives and stories\, and engaging and reconfiguring spiritual practices. The show also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy linked to language\, the senses\, and the body in the context of the Americas’ postwar art. \nConceived as an appearance in and of itself\, the show sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences and artistic trajectories of Asian diasporic subjects and collectives across Latin America and the Caribbean\, casting them as both grounded in their particular context and constitutive of broader transnational histories. \nTo accompany the show\, we will present a series of public programs and publish a catalogue. \nThis exhibition is co-curated by Tie Jojima\, associate curator and manager of Exhibitions at Americas Society in New York\, and Yudi Rafael\, independent curator and researcher based in São Paulo\, Brazil.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries.\n\nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.\n\n\nLegacies features works – paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and new media\, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history\, cultural studies\, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation\, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities\, political horizons\, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.\n\nIn addition to aesthetic concerns such as figuration\, abstraction and materiality\, the exhibition tracks how these artists addressed migration\, displacement\, racism\, cultural autonomy\, Western imperialism\, societal violence\, and representations of sexuality and gender through the decades.\n\nLegacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.\n\nThe exhibition also features newly commissioned installations\, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film\, Fresh Kill (1994).\n\nFilmmaker Rea Tajiri presents an assemblage sculpture that expands on her groundbreaking History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige (1991)\, a meditation on her family history and Japanese and Japanese American internment during World War II.\n\nOrganized by Howie Chen\, Curator at 80WSE\, Jayne Cole Southard\, PhD.\, CUNY\, and christina ong\, PhD. \n \nProduced by Jon Huron\, 80WSE.  Gini Yu Pei Lee\, Curatorial Assistant. Gracia Brown and Daniella Occhineri\, Research Assistants. Kate Edelson\, Exhibition Registrar.\n \nThe exhibition’s presentation is made possible by Teiger Foundation.  \n\nSpecial thanks for the support of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, Squid Frames\, CHENZO.STUDIO\, and Fales Library and Special Collections. Equipment provided in part by Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.\n\n\nImage credit:  Bridge Magazine Vol. 1 No. 6. New York: Basement Workshop\, 1972

SUMMARY:Broadway: Yellow Face
DESCRIPTION:Discount 30% off with code: AANHPI \nTony Award® winner and three-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will make his Roundabout debut with the Broadway premiere of Yellow Face\, his hilarious is-he-or-isn’t-he comedy of identity\, show business\, and (perhaps) autobiography. Starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).  \nInspired by real events\, the playwright’s fictionalized doppelgänger protests yellowface casting in Miss Saigon\, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. This Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer finalist play is a laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Shinnai Meets Puppetry: One Night in Winter & The Peony Lantern
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 7 at 7:30 pm\nFriday\, November 8 at 7:30 pm—Followed by an artist Q&A\nSaturday\, November 9 at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm \nLimited seating. (Seating: General Admission) \nFollowing her highly popular run of SHEEP #1 at Japan Society in 2021\, NYC-based artist Sachiyo Takahashi/Nekaa Lab presents two whimsical and spooky tales: a heart-warming-then-wrenching fable on the friendship between a shapeshifting tanuki trickster and a lonely old man; and a classical Japanese ghost story to chill you to the bone. These stories were set by shinnai-bushi Grand Master Okamoto Bunya (1895-1996) to rustic\, lyrical storytelling music with shamisen accompaniment. Takahashi\, who has practiced shinnai-bushi under the authorized stage name of Okamoto Miya\, performs this expressive music while her collaborators Rowan Magee and Emma Wiseman animate these fantastical stories with original puppets and new puppetry techniques\, sure to enchant children and adults alike. (Recommended Age 8+) \nPerformed in English and Japanese with English supertitles. \n

SUMMARY:PAGE TURNER 2024: The AAWW Publishing Conference
DESCRIPTION:PAGE TURNER centers the work and experiences of writers of color\, and aims to demystify the often opaque business of publishing.\n\n\nThis fall\, we are thrilled to present PAGE TURNER: The Asian American Writers’ Workshop Publishing Conference\, a signature program that we’ll present in-person on Saturday\, November 9th\, at our event space in New York. For those unable to attend in person\, the event will be available via livestream for a discounted ticket price. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for assistance if you are able to join in person but the ticket price is prohibitive. \nOur publishing conference will center the work and experiences of writers of color\, and aims to demystify the often opaque business of publishing and writing\, convening experts and authors across industries and genres to share candid insights\, advice\, and experiences. From the latest generation of literary debuts to queer voices in poetry\, AAWW invites conference attendees to explore deeply the craft of writing and publishing with an incredible lineup of panels featuring highly sought-after industry insiders. \nCheck out the conference schedule below! We will announce the lineup for each panel in the coming weeks: \n10:00 am – 10:30 am: Keynote Address \n10:45 am – 11:45 am: Disrupting the Narrative: The Future of Literary Criticism \nJoin Katie Yee\, Ismail Ibrahim\, Spencer Quong\, TD Tso\, and Vina Orden as they discuss what literary criticism looks like in the context of an ever-changing media and technological landscape. Panelists will unpack how narratives are crafted and consumed\, all while making a case for literature’s ability to challenge the status quo and inspire social transformation. \n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Resonant Verses: Craft\, Form\, and the Poetics of Kinship \nPoetry places a premium on the emotional\, often at the expense of narrative. How do we write to express emotions\, and not just represent ideas? From exploring the musicality of language to navigating the tension between form and freedom\, panelists Ayesha Raees\, Jan Henry Gray\, Sreshtha Sen\, and Jasmine Reid will discuss the craft techniques that elevate their work. They’ll also examine the role of personal and cultural narratives in shaping the forms their writings take. \n1:15 pm – 2:15 pm: Lunch Break \n2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Undoing Genre: Emerging Voices From Across the Literary Spectrum \nAuthors Maddie Mori\, Nina Sharma\, noam keim\, and Karen Mok will discuss the distinct and often winding paths they each took toward publishing their work across poetry\, memoir\, and fiction. From navigating the complexities of finding the right literary agents to negotiating their first contracts\, the authors will share the highs and lows of their journeys. What were some similarities across the authors’ experiences? What were some differences? The discussion will also touch on how identity and representation played a role in shaping their publishing journeys\, offering a deeper look at the intersection of personal and professional challenges. To what extent were the similarities due to the general vagaries of publishing\, and to what extent were the differences influenced by the specific genres in which each writer published? Expect an engaging conversation that sheds light on the realities of breaking into the literary world as a debut author. \n3:45 pm – 4:45 pm: Behind the Covers: Labor Practices in Small Press Publishing \nJoin Tara Jayakar\, Meher Manda\, Jenna Hamed\, and Sunny Iyer as they discuss the inner workings of small presses that champion marginalized voices in American literature. The panelists will dive into the labor practices that shape the production of books in the small press world\, from the challenges of operating on limited budgets to the creative strategies used to amplify marginalized voices\, the panel will explore the often unseen labor behind publishing. Attendees will gain insights into the unique dynamics of small press publishing\, the ethical considerations of their practices\, and how these presses are instrumental in shaping the future of Asian American literature. \n5:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Agents & Editors Happy Hour \nWendi Gu\, Jade Wong-Baxter\, and Krithika Varagur will gather to meet and connect with emerging and aspiring writers. This special networking hour offers aspiring authors a unique chance to connect with industry professionals\, share their work\, and build valuable relationships. Whether your manuscript is complete or you’re still refining your craft\, this is your moment to explore the publishing world with support from experienced literary agents dedicated to amplifying Asian American voices. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority.
